William "Bill" Thomas Ryan, 79, passed away peacefully at his home in Merritt Island, FL on Sunday, March 26 at 12:42am surrounded by his loving family. Mr. Ryan was born in Savannah, GA on December 12, 1937, the son of the late Ira J. and Mary C. Ryan. He was a graduate of Cathedral Day School, Benedictine Military School and Georgia State University.
Mr. Ryan was the devoted caretaker for his wife of nearly 60 years prior to his diagnosis with Acute Myeloid Leukemia. He was instrumental in the administration and property management of Madison Antique Markets and a former member of St. James Catholic Church in Madison, GA.
Mr. Ryan was a Chemical Laboratory Supervisor at Hercules, Inc, now Ashland Chemical, and retired after over 35 years of service. He was a docent at the Fox Theater in Atlanta and enjoyed the Opera the most. Mr. Ryan spent 15 years as a Georgia High School Football Association referee. He served in the 117th ANG unit in Savannah during the mid 1950's.
His hobbies included construction,- building 3 houses for his family, and sailing. He owned a sailboat manufacturing company in the late 1970's producing the Dolphin Sr. which he and his family spent many summers sailing off the beaches of Tybee.
In 1986, Mr. Ryan obtained his private pilots' license and was the inspiration for his daughters' future airline careers.
Mr. Ryan's greatest hobby was spending time with his grandson, joining him at scouting functions and creating elaborate school projects together.
He is survived by his wife Patricia, daughters Terry (Loriann DeMelis) Ryan, Kay (Terry) Glendy all of Merritt Island, FL, grandson Ryan Moody of Athens, GA, a sister Marie Dillon, and two brothers Tim (Mary) Ryan and Joe (Honey) Ryan all of Savannah, GA and many nieces and nephews.
