William Gallagher Godbold died peacefully, surrounded by his immediate family at bedside, on the morning of Monday January 8, 2018 in his long-time home in Savannah, GA. Billy, as known to his loved ones was born October 18, 1926, in Savannah, GA the son of William Frank Godbold and Annie Gallagher Godbold.
Billy graduated from Benedictine Military School in Savannah, GA. He served for four years in the armed guard and a gunner's mate in the United States Navy during World War II. He worked for over 25 years as a longshoreman in the clerks and checkers union of the ILA 1475 in Savannah, GA. Upon his retirement from the ILA, he spent many years traveling with friends and family, along with countless hours on the golf course.
Billy was passionate throughout life in his personal hobby of photography. He loved showing off the pictures he had taken throughout the years of significant events in his and loved one's lives. Not only did he love to play golf but he enjoyed watching it, especially if local favorite and friend Gene Sauers was playing in a tournament. In addition to golf, he loved football especially the Georgia Bulldogs. He was devout in his Catholic faith and attended church until he was no longer able to get out of the house. He was a founding parishioner of St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church. He was a long-standing member of the St. Patrick's Day Parade Committee and the Irish Heritage Society.
Billy is preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Theresa Godbold; brothers William Frank Godbold Jr andGustavious Godbold; sister Kathleen (Godbold) Culler; and parents William Frank Godbold and Annie Gallagher Godbold
Billy is survived by his only son, Michael Godbold and his wife Robin Godbold of Savannah, GA; granddaughter Caitlin Godbold of Savannah, GA; nephew Frank Godbold and his wife Jeanne Godbold of Hot Springs, AR; nephew Chris Godbold and his wife Connie Godbold of Orlando, FL; nephew Melvin Culler and his wife Kaye Culler of Durham, NC; and many great nephews and nieces.
A Catholic funeral service is to be held on Monday January 15, 2018 at 12:00 p.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church at 1707 Bull St. Savannah, GA. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be sent to Hospice Savannah (
