Walter Dobbin Horne, a life-long resident of Savannah, Georgia, died on May 14, 2020 at the age of 86 due to complications from Alzheimer’s. Mr. Horne was a resident at The Oaks at Pooler.
During his lifetime, Walter wore many hats. He was a Marine Veteran, a Captain of the Savannah Fire department and subsequently served in the 7th District Volunteer Fire Department. For over thirty years, he and his wife Gay operated a successful business, Kirby of Savannah.
He was a longtime member of the former Wilder Memorial Baptist church and served as a Deacon for many years.
He belonged to many distinguished philanthropic organizations such as The Gideons, The Lions Club, The Optimist Club and the World Changers to name a few.
He was also member of the Zerubbabel Lodge # 15 and the Commercial High Cobra Club.
One of his favorite roles was Santa Claus. He was a natural and loved playing the part.
With all these accomplishments and titles, he was the most humble, generous, helpful man to anyone he encountered. Young or old, poor or wealthy, deserving or not deserving, it mattered not. He rarely, if ever, turned down any request for help. He worked hard at anything he did and had the patience of Job.
Walter was a devoted son, a loving husband and father, a supportive mentor and big brother, an inspirational grandfather and great-grandfather, a humble servant of God and a friend to all.He will be sorely missed by friends and family.
He is survived by his daughter Sandra Dick (Dennis), his brothers Melvin Horne, Albert Horne (Lois), Edward Horne (Bonnie), his sisters Betty Yawn (Levis) and Barbara Jaudon (Joe), grandchildren Justin Dick (Julie Anne), Amanda Phillips (Bobby) , two great grandchildren, Ella Craven and Sun Dick and three bonus great grands Cassie Phillips, Kailey Phillips and Audrey Phillips as well as many nieces and nephews.
He is predeceased by his wife Gay Nell Horne, father Walter N. Horne and his mother Ethel Horne Norton.
Due to health considerations caused by the COVID-19 outbreak, a private graveside service will be held on May 18, 2020.
