Garden City

Wallace Vernon Wingate Jr., 95, of Garden City, Georgia, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 2nd, 2025. Born on Saturday, December 7th, 1929, in Savannah, Georgia, Wallace lived a life rich in love, service, and dedication.

A proud veteran of the United States Marine Corps, Wallace served his country honorably during the Korean War, where he bravely fought at the infamous Battle of Chosin Reservoir. He often reflected on his military service with the adage, "Old Marines Never Die; They Just Fade Away," a sentiment that resonated deeply with his spirit of resilience and camaraderie.

Following his military service, Wallace embarked on a distinguished career with Union Camp Corporation, later known as International Paper Company. Over a remarkable 37-year tenure, he rose to the position of Supervisor, retiring with a legacy of hard work and commitment that was celebrated by his colleagues and friends.

Wallace was an avid outdoorsman who found joy and solace in dancing, hunting, and fishing. He was a cherished member of the Hamilton Ridge Hunting Club and held a special place as the last surviving member of the Savannah Dog Company, keeping the spirit and tales of camaraderie alive.

Family was at the center of Vernon’s life. He is survived by his devoted son, Wallace Craig Wingate, and his loving daughters, Jennifer Broyles, Judith Bolen, and Jacqueline Manz (James); six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and dear friends who were like family. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 55 years, Anne Wingate; his parents, Wallace Vernon Wingate Sr. and Anne Frances Wingate; and his sisters, Frances Litchfield and Dorothy Patrick.

The family will receive friends during a visitation at Baker McCullough Funeral Home Garden City Chapel, on Sunday, April 6th, 2025, from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm. A funeral service to honor Vernon's life will be held on Monday, April 7th, 2025, at 1:30 pm at the same location. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Abbey West Cemetery.
