Virginia Smith Huber

Virginia Smith Huber (known as Meme or GG Meme) died peacefully in her sleep at her home on Isle of Hope. Virginia was born in Savannah, GA to Virginia Wingard Smith and Wilbur G Smith Sr on a rainy blustery spring day. She graduated from Savannah High School, Armstrong State College and Georgia Southern University. She obtained an AA, BS, M Ed, and Ed Specialist in Elementary education. While at school, she was involved with the Beta Club, Distributive Ed Club, Radio Club, Alpha Tau Beta Sorority, Phi Alpha Beta History Honor Society, and Kappa Delta Kappa Education Honor Society.
Virginia taught school at Savannah Christian Kindergarten, Hesse and Windsor Forest Elementary, and Wilder Middle School.
Virginia was a member of St Paul’s Lutheran Church on 31st and Bull Street, Savannah, GA, where she served as the first woman Church Council President, and member of the Day School Ministries, the Financial Committee, Computer instructor, and Women of Evangelical Lutheran Church of America.
Virginia was a member of Kindergarten Association of Savannah, Chatham Association of Educators, Georgia Association of Educators, Georgia Radio Readers for the Visually Impaired, American Association of University Women, Savannah Storytellers, and the Savannah Ogeechee Canal board of directors.
Virginia married the love of her life, Henry Karl Huber on July 17, 1954. They had three daughters, five grandchildren, and four great grandchildren. Virginia and Henry loved to travel, build houses, and spend time with their family. She was an excellent story-teller.
Virginia is survived by her daughters Cynthia Huber (Karole Smidke) of Willits, CA, Catherine Lewis (Randall) of Tybee Island, GA, and Caroline Hester of Wilmington Island, GA, grandchildren Brandon (Liana) Griffin of Seattle, WA, Elizabeth (Ali) Sazegari of Los Altos, CA, Dr. Stephanie (Kyle) Gibson of Columbia, SC, Levi Lewis of Alachua, FL, and Clayton Hester of Rincon, GA, great-grandchildren Deklan & Elia Griffin of Seattle, WA, Kade & Sarina Sazegari of Los Altos, CA, sister Linda Larson of Charleston, SC, and sister-in-law Chris Smith of Sarasota, FL.
The service to celebrate Virginia’s life will be on December 29th 2023 at St Paul’s Lutheran Church, 31st and Bull Street, Savannah, Georgia. Visitation will begin at 10 am followed by the service at 11 am. Burial will be after lunch at Bonaventure Cemetery in the Wingard Plot.
