Hazel Virginia Holliday

December 16, 1923 — July 20, 2023

Hazel “Virginia” Holliday, 99, made her transition to eternity on Thursday, July 20, 2023. The lifelong resident of Savannah was born on December 16, 1923, to the late Frances Anita Comati Holliday and Grover Cleveland Holliday.

Virginia was employed at Memorial Medical Center for 24 years. Other than her vacation dates, Virginia never missed one day of work at her job at Memorial.

On January 19th, 1964, Virginia became a member of Asbury Memorial Methodist Church, and thus began a 60-year love affair between Virginia and the people of Asbury. Known for her selfless giving and her boundless energy, Virginia devoted her life to the ministries of the church. She served on the Kitchen Hospitality Team, sang in the Church Choir, played in the Handbell Choir, served as the Choir Librarian organizing the music, was a member of the Busy Bees making Asbury’s famous clown dolls, and served as an office volunteer performing many tasks. To help low-income families, she led Asbury’s Love Walk Team to raise thousands of dollars for the Wesley Community Centers for many years. Virginia earned such admiration and respect from the congregation that on September 20, 2020, the church social hall was named in Virginia’s honor, calling it, “Holliday Hall.”

Virginia’s life will be honored and celebrated at Asbury Memorial’s worship service on Sunday, August 20th at 11:15 a.m. A lunch reception will follow in Holliday Hall. Virginia’s famous sweet tea will be served! All are invited!

Virginia was predeceased by her sisters, Anita Holliday, Mary Holliday, Louise Bitter, and brother, Grover Holliday.
She is survived by brother, Leo A. Holliday, of Augusta, Georgia, and by nieces and nephews.

We thank Virginia’s close friend, Claudette DeLong, for the great care she gave Virginia in her later years; we thank her longtime BFF, Mary Alice Garvin, for her special friendship with Virginia; And we thank all of the members of Asbury who loved and assisted Virginia over the years.

Remembrances may be given to Asbury Memorial Church, 1008 East Henry Street, Savannah, GA, 31401.
