Tommy Douglas Altizer

September 16, 1948 — February 27, 2025

Savannah

Tommy Douglas Altizer passed away in the early morning hours of Thursday, February 27th, at Memorial Health University Medical Center, with his loving wife and daughter by his side. He was 76.

Tommy was born in Roanoke, Virginia on September 16, 1948, to the late Jesse Douglas Altizer and Bobbie Jean Graham Altizer. The oldest of three children, Tommy spent his childhood in Williamsburg, Virginia. He was a proud veteran, who honorably served in the United States Navy from 1968 to 1970.

Tommy moved to Savannah, GA in 1973 to work in Savannah’s budding hotel industry. Through the 1980s and 1990s, Tommy spent his career in home sales, ultimately co-owning a small home construction company. During the last twenty years, he worked in mortgage banking and sales. He retired in 2020.

While he was a man of few words, Tommy was a consummate storyteller and during his later years gave tours in historic downtown Savannah and Wormsloe historic site, combining his gift of storytelling with his lifelong love of history.

Tommy will be remembered as a man of deep faith and character. His love of Jesus was the foundation and guiding force of his life. Above all, Tommy was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He cherished his wife and daughter, who both adored him, and his beloved grandson, “that little blonde, blue-eyed boy” who bears his name.

He is survived by his wife of forty-eight years Delleen Hammock Altizer; daughter Tammy Altizer Brawner; grandson Tommy Altizer “Tab” Brawner; brother David Altizer (Betty); sister Darla Robertson (David); son-in-law Hoke Brawner; brother-in-law Curt Hammock (Elaine); and several nieces and nephews.

A private gathering will be held at a later date.
