Thomas Joseph Whalen, Jr, 83, died Wednesday, March 6, 2024 at home after a long illness. Tommy, as he was known to all of his family and friends, was a native of Savannah and a
lifelong parishioner of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
Tommy graduated from Benedictine Military School in 1959 and attended St. Bernard’s College in Cullman, Alabama. He was immensely proud of his Irish heritage and was a member of the Hibernian Society of Savannah for over forty years. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the BC Survivors Club. He was a voracious reader, an avid fan of Nascar and the Georgia Bulldogs, and enjoyed a shot of Jameson every now and then. His memories of old Savannah and the Irish-Catholic community were unmatched. He was a proud father of six children, grandfather of ten grandchildren, and great-grandfather of two great-grandsons. Tommy was deeply loved by his family, and we will never forget his twinkling eyes, his enormous sense of humor, and the deep love he showed to all of us.
Tommy was preceded in death by his oldest child, Susan Patricia Whalen, and his son-in-law, Christopher Janda. He is survived by his wife of sixty-three years, Patricia Kelly Whalen; his children, Thomas (Zdena) Whalen, III, Stephen (Laura) Whalen, Charles (Jennifer) Whalen, Mary Beth Whalen Janda, and Michael (Beth) Whalen; his grandchildren, Nicholas (Shinal) Janda, Coleman (Camille) Whalen, Michael (Nathalia) Whalen, Joshua Whalen, Patrick (Lauren) Janda, Matthew Whalen, Julia Whalen, Chase Whalen, Jack Whalen, and Liam Whalen; his great grandsons, Finnegan Whalen and Whitman Whalen; his brother J. Nicholas (Nancy) Whalen; and many nieces and nephews.
