Theodore Albert Rice

June 18, 1946 — March 28, 2023

Theodore Albert (Ted) Rice passed away in Savannah, Georgia on March 28, 2023, after a long struggle to recover from an aortic aneurysm.

He was born June 18, 1946, in Columbus, Ohio. Ted graduated from Grove City High School and followed in his father’s and grandfather’s footsteps going to work for the Norfolk Southern Railroad. He enlisted in the Navy and served two tours of duty in Viet Nam with the last being on swift boats patrolling the rivers and the delta. After the Navy he attended Franklin University earning a bachelor’s degree in business. He had a wide range of business employment including the Miller Funeral Home, Coca Cola Distribution, and Waste Management landfill management. Next, he began working with people as an organizer for the Ohio Farm Bureau and with the Ohio American Legion where he lobbied for veteran’s benefits and helped veterans apply for the benefits to which they were entitled. His final employer was the State of Ohio, Bureau of Workers’ Compensation where he was the director of Self Insurance. Through all his experiences he learned that he was truly an entrepreneur. He founded the Ricwell Corporation that provided expert medical testimony for litigated cases. Ted merged his company with other similar companies and became part of the ExamWorks Corporation. A highlight for him was standing on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange when the company went public.

Ted married Caryl Moler in 1984 and while in Ohio lived in Southern Delaware County, on a farm in Madison County, and at Indian Lake. After retirement they moved to Jekyll Island, Georgia. Ted has made wonderful friends wherever worked and lived.

Ted was a member of the Grove City Masonic Lodge, the Indian Lake Moose Lodge, and the Jekyll Island Rotary Club where he became the master fund raiser. Through the years he was a member of the Grove City Lutheran Church, Liberty Presbyterian Church, and the Jekyll Presbyterian Community Church.

Ted’s hobbies included swapping stories with his many friends and his 56 Chevy with which he had a love-hate relationship.

Ted is survived by his wife, Caryl; his sister, Gayle Rice; his stepson, Robert (Bo) Snide (Tracy); and granddaughters, Emma and Abby. He is also survived by his niece, Julie Morrison; nephew, John Morrison (Vickie); and grandnephew, John Reagan Morrison who Ted always thought of as his grandson. He was preceded in death by his father, Theodore (Bud) Rice and mother, Laura Tomlinson Rice.
