On Saturday, March 30, 2024, Shirley Jean Mew, loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother, passed away at age 87, peacefully surrounded by family.
Shirley was born in the Finklea community of Horry County, South Carolina, on May 12,1936, to James and Epidell Mew. Shirley moved to Tabor City, NC at age 14 to live with her older brother and sister-in-law. Shirley attended Tabor City High where she enjoyed cheerleading, representing her high school as a majorette in the Columbus County marching band, and was honored to be crowned Miss Tabor City High.
Shirley married Jimmy Roy Rogers, graduated from Rex Nursing School and worked as a registered nurse in Atlanta, GA for 50+ years. After retiring from Northside Hospital and Atlanta Outpatient, Shirley continued providing the same devoted and professional attention as a part-time caregiver into her early eighties. Shirley moved to Hickory, NC to be closer to her extended family, eventually spending in her final year in Savannah, GA.
Shirley was an energetic, passionate people person who loved to talk, laugh and who never met a stranger. She loved reading biographies and attending her children’s and grandchildren’s endless concerts and sporting events, where she was their biggest fan and cheerleader.
Shirley was preceded in death by her mother and father, Epidell and James Mew and 8 siblings. She is survived by her brother, Billy; her 3 children, Kyle, Kipley (ex-wife, Tina Giffin) Julie Kay Rogers; grandchildren, Ben, Daniel, Sam, and Luke Rogers; and great grandchild, Ellis with a baby sister on the way.
A traditional funeral service is not immediately planned; a memorial service will be announced in the near future via Shirley’s Facebook page.
