Shirley Bragg Gardner

d. January 7, 2017

Shirley Jean Bragg Gardner, 82, of Port Wentworth, passed away Friday, January 6, 2017 at her home under the care of Gentiva Hospice.

From Amy Lauren Gardner:
Some things my mom would want you to know about her...
Nini loved being a Great Grandmother...She was a college Graduate...She was the first female Purchasing Manager at Savannah Sugar Refinery...She was an extraordinarily flamboyant interior designer...She was a Bulloch County State Basketball Champion....She was a wicked golfer (never beat her)...She was a beach enthusiast...She would want you to know that you will have a better appreciation of your accomplishments IF you earn them, and that ANYTHING is possible!!!

From Hampton Edwards Gardner:
Shirley was not just my mother, she was my friend. She would frequently call me...OR I would reach out to her, and we shared great conversations about interesting topics: PBS, religion, art, horticulture, and of course, family.
On PBS...there was the epic portrayal of aristocratic life in 19th century England.. Downton Abbey ..we both enjoyed the soap opera like parallels and would question each other on the happenings if one of us failed to catch an episode
On the subject of Religion, we were in agreement. We both shared a belief in the afterlife--and that in order to get to heaven; a person had to do his ABC's
A. Admit to God that you are a sinner...Romans 3:23
B. Believe in Jesus as God's Son and receive Jesus' gift of forgiveness from sin...John 3:16
C. Confess your faith in Jesus Christ as Savoir and Lord to others...Romans 10:9-10,
Horticulture and gardening was one of her hobbies and is my avocation,as I am a Master Gardener, so I often was called to consult with Shirley on why this or that plant was not doing what it should have been doing(LoL)...Statistics show that most plants die from 2 typical causes: too much water OR two little water.
As a local Savannah Museum docent, she held a fantastic ability to look at a canvas from the painter's perspective and glean those "snippets of color" any average patron of the arts could easily overlook. This type of insight shouldered her embrace and deep love for the medium.
Mary Cassatt was her all-time favorite!!! and in 2010 Shirley came to Boca to visit me and we attended the Largest show ever held in the US of Impressionists from America. We were lost in the splendor of those amazing works--we came away from that showing in awe of what we had experienced together.
Where family was concerned, mom often had to be a referee, as expected, with 5 children; this could easily put a parent to the "test". Growing up in Blitchton, there was never a lack for anything that was needed, as Shirley was a superb homemaker.
I can say this from my heart: "Shirley will be missed by ALL that had the good fortune to have known her genteel southern personality..."Suggy", she would say, "Your momma LOVES you!!!"

From David Mills Gardner:
SO......my mother Shirley Bragg Gardner....my greatest teacher/friend/confidant
She: was my go to person on many (most) of my biggest decisions
NEVER gave me bad advice was ALWAYS spot on and RIGHT on everything she told me
carried me 9 months; I was her smallest child at birth; I became her BIGGEST not her BEST
loved me unconditionally and helped me tremendously through my life...I was her "2"...and will remain.I am indebted to my mother for the rest of my life...LOVE number 2!!!

From Stephen Lane Gardner
