Senior Chief Petty Officer Barry Lamar Godbee, 69, passed away March 4th in Jacksonville, FL at Baptist Medical Center after a brief illness.
Barry was born on August 18, 1947 in Millen, GA. As a young boy, Barry's parents moved to Savannah where he grew up. He graduated from Savannah High School in 1965. He then joined the Navy Reserve and served on the USS Strong during Vietnam (1967-1968). In 1969, he enlisted in the Navy and served in the T.A.R. Program until July 1981. He began submarine service in October 1981 where he served until his retirement in July 1993. He served the USS Sand Lance (SSN 660), USS Seahorse (SSN 669), Comsubron Four, NFAS Orlando and the USS West Virginia (SSBN 736) (Gold).
He earned the Navy Commendation Medal with Gold Star, Navy Achievement Medal with Gold Star, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with two Bronze Stars, and Sea Service Deployment Medal.
Following retirement from the Navy, he pursued a career in insurance as a workers' comp adjuster and field inspector for property insurance.
He is survived by his wife, Paula Hendry Godbee and his daughters, Brandi Godbee-Whiting (Matt) of Orlando, FL and Hollie Godbee of Fernandina Beach, FL. He was predeceased by his parents Ralph and Emma Lee Godbee, and brothers, Wayne and Larry.
Visitation: Thursday, March 9th from 11:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon.
Funeral Services will be at 12:00 noon at Baker McCullough Funeral Home, Hubert C. Baker Chapel, 7415 Hodgson Memorial Drive, Savannah, Ga.
Interment will follow in Hillcrest Abbey West Cemetery, with full Military Honors.
