“Her Children rise up and call her blessed…” Though having no children of her own, Sarah Janice McElveen was a mother-like figure to all her nieces and nephews. Every family should have a “Janice.” Every Church fellowship should have a “Janice.” Whether it was with her natural family, or her Church family, whatever needed to be done, she would see to it, and she never had to be asked to do anything. She would just see the need and she would meet it. She was a caretaker in every sense of and beyond the word, caring for her father and her sisters during their times of sickness. Janice entered into her Savior’s presence on July 31st surrounded by family that loved her so much. Born September 10, 1942, to Moses Judson and Sarah Louise McElveen, Janice lived all of her life in Savannah, Georgia. She was employed by the Federal Railroad Retirement Board and also the Internal Revenue Service. Janice was a charter member of the New Hope Fellowship Christian Church where she served as church treasurer. Before her membership with New Hope, she was a longtime member of the Faith Primitive Baptist Church, serving as both clerk and treasurer. Proverbs 31:29 is a fitting statement of her life: “Many women have done excellently, but you surpass them all.” She will be greatly missed by her family.
Janice was predeceased by her parents, Moses Judson and Sarah Louise McElveen; three sisters, Dorothy Louise Hinely, Bobbie Lois Harrison, Nina Margie Robbins; and one brother Nathaniel Judson (Sonny) McElveen. She is survived by two sisters, Laura Anne Milton and Sandra Faye Polk; and one brother, James Lowell McElveen. She is also survived by 18 of her 24 nieces and nephews; a number of great nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews.
A memorial service for Janice will be held on Saturday, August 6, 2022 at 11:00 AM. The service will be at the New Hope Fellowship Christian Church.
