Ronald T. Niven (October 31, 1934 - April 30, 2017)
Ronald (Ronnie) T. Niven, 82, passed away on Sunday, April 30, 2017. He was born October 31, 1934 in Deland, Florida, in the family home. He was the son of Stanley W. and Margurite L. Niven.
He graduated from Savannah High School in 1952. He served in the Army National Guard for 18 years in Savannah, G.A. He began his career at CSX Railroad here in Savannah, G.A. He later went on to work for the National Gypsum Company for 40 years. He became the AFL-CIO Union President of the Savannah Gypsum plant and led the union workers on a successful strike for better working conditions, wages and benefits.
The next year, the company promoted him as a company supervisor. While Ronnie was working full-time at National Gypsum Company, he was the co-owner of the Gulf Oil Service Center on Bay Street in Savannah, G.A. During this time, it became the highest producing Gulf Service Center in the city.
Ronnie was admired for his dedication to his family, hard work and his willingness to help others. He was predeceased by his wife of 51 years, Shelby Jean Niven, his father Stanley Wilfred Niven, his mother Margurite Leona Niven, and his sister Shirley Niven Jordan.
Surviving him are his two sons, Larry R. Niven (Debra) and T. Darren Niven (Brenda). He is also survived by three grandchildren: Ozma A. Niven, Lake E. Niven, and Duncan H. Niven.
Rosary Service: 5:30 p.m. Monday, May 1, 2017 at Baker McCullough Funeral Home in Garden City, G.A.
Visitation will be from 6:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. Monday, May 1, 2017 at Baker McCullough Funeral Home in Garden City, G.A.
Graveside service will be at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 2, 2017 at the Greenwich Cemetery.
