Roger Lynn Brucker

August 13, 1948 — January 30, 2023

Roger Lynn Brucker passed away at home in Savannah on January 30, 2023.

Roger was born in Biloxi, Mississippi on August 13, 1948. He was the son of a career Air Force major and moved with his family to bases all over the U.S. with overseas posts in Scotland and Japan.
Roger’s favorite place to live was Honolulu, Hawaii where he learned to surf. He and his friends surfed all over Oahu Island - Waikiki Beach, Diamond Head, Waimea Bay. He didn’t love school but he loved being in the water, it was freedom.

Much to Roger’s dismay his next surfing destination was Tybee Island when his family moved to Savannah in 1965. Yes there were waves at Tybee. It was never like California or Hawaii, not even much like Florida. But during hurricane season and whenever a cold front passed through, there were likely to be rideable waves. Roger was an integral part of the Tybee surfing community in the 1960s and early 1970s. That community included Rusty Fleetwood, Chip Orr, Mickey Youmans, Jack Macher, Barry Mock, Jack and Craig Palmer, Craig Probst, Tommy Smith, and the Phillips brothers, to name just a few.

In addition to being an accomplished surfer, Roger also made surfboards. He and his friend Charlie Gay established Seasons Surfboards at Tybee in 1968. Roger was the builder, shaper, and glasser and Charlie was the business partner. In 1973 Roger relocated to Atlantic Beach, Florida to build surfboards with Mickey Youmans. He later produced a “Master Glasser Series” video to teach surfboard glassing techniques.

Roger was a gifted woodworker and artisan. In 1987 he established Brucker Furniture Workshop where he refinished, restored and painted antiques and furniture of all kinds. He was active in this business until his health began to fail in 2020.

Roger was preceded in death by his father, Marvin Brucker, and his mother, Frances Marie Brown Brucker. He is survived by his sister, Janice Brucker Yarbrough, two nephews Cole Yarbrough (Morgan) and Miles Yarbrough (Carol Lee), and two great-nieces, Parker and Mollie Yarbrough.

The family will be receiving friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on February 24, 2023 at Baker McCullough Funeral Home, 7415 Hodgson Memorial Drive, Savannah, Georgia 31406. Roger’s ashes will be scattered in a traditional “paddle out” when the weather warms in April. Details regarding paddle out will be forthcoming.
