Robert Paul Haworth, 80, of Savannah, GA passed away on January 23, 2024 after a
long illness.
Rob was born September 6, 1943 to Robert M. Haworth and Florence G. Haworth in
Waukegan, IL. Their family would move to Green Bay, WI before finally settling in
Bellevue, NE. He graduated from Bellevue High School, where he never bothered to
study but an exceptional athlete. He was Nebraska’s state wrestling champion for his
weight class in 1961 and went on to play football for the University of Nebraska
Cornhuskers.
In 1969, Rob was called upon to serve in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. For his
efforts he was awarded the Bronze Star for Meritorious Service in a combat zone,
among many other commendations. After being discharged in 1974, he moved to
Savannah to be closer to his sister, Nancy Holscher, and her family. There he met
Sheila, who would be his caring and steadfast companion for the rest of his life. He
married Sheila and earned his bachelor's degree in criminal justice from Armstrong
State College. They raised their family in Bloomingdale and Rob quickly became a
staple member of that community.
Rob was a long time member and faithful servant at White Bluff Presbyterian Church
where he sang in the choir for many years. He was an enthusiastic husband and father
who encouraged others to see the humor in any given situation. Rob’s fun loving
attitude and gregarious nature were infectious to those around him – he never missed a
party, never met a stranger, and always had the time for a chat. He was a seasoned fan
of the Nebraska Cornhuskers and the Atlanta Braves.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Sheila; his children David (Maureen), Deborah,
Beth (Jess), Cheryl, and Katie; sister Nancy (Gary) and several nieces, nephews,
grandchildren, and a great grandson. He is predeceased by both his parents and his
grandson, Scotty.
His passing is heavily felt by his family, friends, and by others who were touched by his
joie de vivre. The family deeply appreciates the support they have received during this
time. A Service will be held at White Bluff Presbyterian Church on April 6, 2024 at 11am.
