Robert Andrew Hager

January 10, 1937 — March 24, 2023

Robert Andrew Hager, 86, passed away Friday, March 24, 2023 with his wife and children by his side. He was a remarkable man who completely changed many people’s lives.

Bob was born January 10, 1937 in Jonesboro, Arkansas to parents Pauline Cole and Thomas Curtis Hager. When he was 17, he joined the United States Air and was stationed in Texas. There he met the love of his life, Frances Ann Modawell, while roller skating, and three months later, on August 4, 1956, they were married at First Baptist Church in Fort Worth, TX. The military took them, and their two children, to many different places, including Puerto Rico and Newfoundland. His last duty station was Savannah, Georgia where he finished out his Air Force career in the Air National Guard before retiring.

Bob returned to school and graduated from Baptist Bible College majoring in Music and Education with honors, receiving a Bachelor of Arts Degree.

He started a second career with the US Postal service as a Letter Carrier for Bingville Branch Post office. Bob enjoyed meeting people on his route between Columbus and Waters, 56th and 57th, and back to Paulsen Street. He even attempted to befriend a few dogs even though some of those friendships ended in bite marks. Bob’s work ethic and determination impressed his son who, while going downtown to pick up work materials, stopped and watched his Dad, from a distance, at work. Even on a hot Savannah summer day, Bob, with a wet towel on his head, and a letter bag weighing over fifty pounds could somehow still have a smile on his face.

Bob liked to stay busy. He liked to restore old things and tinker in his shed. He loved to help everyone that crossed his path, even hitchhikers. Bob never meant a stranger, and was known for his “Bob Jokes”. He was a member of Bible Baptist Church. He taught Sunday School, was a member of the choir, was a soloist, and member of Soul Witnessing. Bob enjoyed teaching others the word of God. He even created his own Bible Dictionary, placing scriptures in layman’s terms. This was helpful for many to fully understand the Bible.

Bob is preceded in death by his parents, Pauline Cole, and Thomas Curtis Hager; and two sisters, Mary Frances McLean, and Catherine Hollinghause.

Bob is survived by his wife of 66 years, Frances Ann Modawell Hager; his brother, Thomas Hager; his son, Robert Kevin Hager (Amy); his daughter, Kimberly Kay Ellard (Kenneth); six grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren.

A visitation will be held 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon Tuesday, March 28, 2023 at Bible Baptist Church, 4700 Skidaway Rd, Savannah, GA 31404. A funeral service will begin at noon with Pastor McInerney and Pastor Hubbard officiating the service.
