Robert E. Bertz,

d. January 6, 2017

On January 5, 2017, Robert E. Bertz, Sr. was called to be with God and reunited with the love of his life and family that had gone before him.

Robert (Bob) was born the sixth child of eight siblings to parents of Polish descent in Chicago, Illinois in 1934. Bob grew up without knowing his father and was raised by his brothers, sisters, and extended family who built in him a fierce independence and strong work ethic. Bob honorably served in the United States Air Force as a Bomb Navigational Radar Mechanic for four years and traveled the world on various "good duty" assignments. It was during his service while stationed at Hunter Army Airfield in Savannah that he met Margaret Ramona Meyers at a USO dance and their love blossomed. Bob and Ramona were married for fifty-two years and would have three children Lisa, Bobby and Brett. Bob was always extremely grateful to Ramona's parents, Herman and Anna Meyers who treated him as their own child.

Bob graduated from the Georgia Institute of Technology with a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering in 1964. He proudly worked for Great Dane Trailers in Savannah for his entire career where he attained the title of Chief Industrial Engineer and retired after 34 years of service. Bob loved his God, his family and his church. He was a dedicated member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Savannah where he contributed as a greeter, lectern reader, and a member of the Men's Work Crew and Investment Club. Throughout his life, he was a man of few words, but when he spoke you knew he meant what he said and that he cared. In his last years he faced loss and extreme physical hardships with courage, strength and grace. His family will be forever blessed for the time that we spent with Bob and for the love that he gave and the life lessons that he taught us.

Bob is predeceased by his mother Monica Gorski Bertz, son Robert E. Bertz, Jr., son-in-law Michael W. Portwood, Sr., sisters Ramona Jecmen and Virginia Bertz, and brothers Daniel, Richard, and John Bertz.

Bob is survived by his daughter Lisa Whiteman (Marty), son Brett Bertz (Suzanne), daughter-in-law Pam Bertz, grandchildren Michael Portwood, Jr., Alison Corrigan (Mark), Caroline Stelling (Drew), Diana Bertz, Robert E. Bertz III, Caitlin Bertz, Madeleine Bertz, and Sander Bertz, great grand-children Zoe Norris, Adeline Corrigan, and Aiden Bertz, brother Conrad Bertz (Rita), sister Judy Kluska, sisters-in-law Norene, Marilyn, and Sandy Bertz, and many loving nieces, nephews and cousins.

Visitation will be on Sunday January 8 from 4:00 until 6:00 PM at Baker McCullough Funeral Home, 7415 Hodgson Memorial Drive in Savannah. Funeral services for Bob will be held on Monday January 9 at 11:00 AM at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 10 W 31st Street in Savannah.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to St. Paul's Lutheran Church or to the American Heart Association.
