Mr. Robert Spaulding Dilworth, Sr., age 92, of Savannah, Georgia passed away on Wednesday, April 10, 2024. Mr. Dilworth was born on June 8, 1931, in Savannah, GA to the late Mr. Frank Dilworth, Sr. and Mrs. Nellie Dilworth.
Mr. Dilworth, also known as “Bobby’’ was a graduate of Beach High School. After graduating high school, he joined the Army and was a Saxophonist with the Army Band. After his discharge from the Army, he attended Savannah State College and earned a Bachelor of Music Education Degree. Mr. Dilworth’s professional career was as a Music Teacher and Band Director in Savannah, GA. He began as the first Band Director at Sol C. Johnson High School, where he wrote music parts for each instrument in the band and choreographed all of the band’s routines. He was such a beloved teacher whose reputation was for setting the bar for “Stellar Band Performances” which reverberated across the entire State of Georgia. His marching and concert bands were known for precision and superior formations. His High School Jazz Band was the envy of this state and others.
Mr. Dilworth and the Sol C. Johnson Band received many accolades and commendations during this time. In 1972, he became a Traveling Music Teacher for the Savannah Chatham County Public Schools System and carried his love of music to all levels in the schools until his retirement.
Along with his parents, Mr. Dilworth was preceded in death by his brothers: Arthur and James Dilworth. He is survived by his sons: Robert Dilworth Jr. and Arthur Dilworth; grandchildren; family & friends.
Viewing will be held on Friday, April 19, 2024, at 10:30 am; Funeral services will follow at 11:00 am at Baker McCullough Funeral Home, Hodgson Memorial Chapel.
Interment will follow in the Catholic Cemetery (1720 Wheaton St. Savannah Ga.31401).
