Joy Mixon, Shellman Bluff

Rita Joy Overstreet Mixon was born April 10, 1929 in Savannah. She lived in Eulonia for the first nine years of her life, from birth until 1938, when her family moved to Savannah. She passed away on March 2nd in Amelia Island, Florida.
Joy gave her heart to Jesus and was baptized at Calvary Baptist Church in Savannah on September 15, 1940, at 11 years of age.
She married Claude Lee Mixon, Jr. (C.L.) on September 18, 1949. They had two sons Claude Michael (May 25, 1954-May 7, 1968) and Stephen Monroe (August 6, 1955-January 3, 1975). Joy and C.L. celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in September 1999.
Joy retired from Atlanta-Savannah Gas Company in 1991, after 41 years of service. C.L. retired from Mixon's Small Engine Service.
Joy and C.L. enjoyed coming to Shellman Bluff every weekend since they purchased their home at Julienton Landings in October 1989. Both were members of Shellman Bluff Baptist Church since 1991. Joy was Choir Director for several years, taught the Children's Sunday School class for several years, was involved in WMU, and was the Sunshine Committee for the church until ill health required her to sell her home and relocate to an Assisted Living home in Fernandina Beach, Florida.
Joy lost her husband C.L. on December 24, 2000 when he went to heaven to join their sons. Along with her husband and two sons, Joy was preceded in death by her father and mother, Robert R. Overstreet and Hattie L. Stephens and her brother, Robert Heyward Overstreet.
Joy is survived by: Her sister-in-law, Elizabeth Futural Overstreet of Savannah and nieces Renee Temple and Kay Overstreet; sister-in-law, Margie Lee Sicklesmith of Sumter, South Carolina, nephews Rickey Lee and Robert Lee, niece Cindy Strickland; sister-in-law, Betty Quick Lockhardt of Princeton, West Virginia, nieces Patrice Quick, Cathy Howell, & Katie Beth Tibbs; her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Gerald M. Mixon, Sr. and his wife Vicki Mixon of Shellman Bluff and her sister-in-law Martha Mixon of Winter Haven, Florida, nephews Jerry, Keith, Greg, and Randy Mixon, niece Kacy Mixon; many great nieces and nephews.
Joy had a special love for family and was faithful in sending birthday and anniversary cards to each and every member until her health declined.
The family will receive friends Friday from 10:30 am to 11:00 am at Shellman Bluff Baptist Church. Funeral Services will follow at 11:00 am, with interment at 3:00 pm, Forest Lawn Memory Gardens, Savannah.
