Richard J. Huggins

d. May 26, 2017

Richard J. Huggins, 73, of Ellabell, GA died Thursday, May 25, 2017 at his home surrounded by his loving family and under the care of Ogeechee Area Hospice.

Richard was born Nov 18, 1943 in Savannah, GA, and attended Carlisle Military School prior to enlisting in the U.S. Marine Corps, to serve our country in the Special Forces Division. Richard served multiple tours in Vietnam and received numerous distinguished metals and accommodations. After returning from Vietnam, he started a career in the beverage industry and proudly served the Fuller Family, who he loved as his own family, for over 50 years. Semper Fidelis ("Always Faithful"), the motto of The U.S. Marine Corps sums up his commitment, his servant's heart, and the love he had for his country and family. He never met a stranger, he took great pride in his work and he considered his work as his home away from home. Like any marine, Richard fought hard through his illness and continued to work. His love and compassion for his family, friends and work is a true testament to his character.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jessie Taylor Huggins, and Walter Anderson Huggins.

He is survived by a daughter, Jackie Huggins Owens (Jeff Owens); granddaughter, Victoria M. Owens; love and soul mate, Louise Roberson; brother, Ronnie Huggins (Sheila Huggins); nephews, Walt Huggins (DeNorah Huggins) and Lee Huggins (Liz Huggins); niece, Ronda Huggins; and several great nieces and nephews.

Richard had been battling through his illness since October 2015. He was a special man, a true marine, and he never gave up his fight. Jackie and Victoria were the most special things in his life. He always put them on a pedestal. He enjoyed spending Sundays with his family, especially his girls, and always made everyone feel special. God now has another proud marine to guard His gate.

Memorial Service: 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 2, 2017 at the Bloomingdale Veterans Park Memorial. Remembrances may be given to Ogeechee Area Hospice of Statesboro at address 200 Donehoo St, Statesboro, GA 30458.
