Rev. Ernest O. King, Jr., 81, of Savannah, died Nov. 1, 2018 at St. Joseph's Hospital.
He was born in Brunswick, Maryland, and was a 1955 Graduate of Brunswick High School, in Brunswick, Maryland; Graduate of Shepherd College, in Shepherdstown, West Virginia, in 1961, Southern Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky, 1964 where he completed 14 hours toward M.C.M., and the Catholic University, in Washington, D.C., from 1971 - 1972.
He served the following churches, First Baptist Church, Brunswick, Maryland (home church), and Organist and Junior Choir Director from 1953 - 1959; First Baptist church, Hagerstown, Maryland (his wife's home church), as Organist and Director of Adult, Youth and Junior Choirs, from 1959 - 1961; First Baptist Church, Easton, Maryland, as Organist/Choir Director, Feb - August 1961; Middletown Christian Church, Middletown, Kentucky, as Organist/Choir Director, of Adult, Junior and Youth Choirs, from 1961 - 1964; First Baptist Church of Port Wentworth, Georgia, Minister of Music and Youth, from 1964 - 1967, where he conducted the complete graded Choir Program, youth activites, V.B.S. Principal, and severed as Music Director for the Savannah Baptist Association, he lead conferences in music at State Music Camps; Pianist for the Evangelistic Conference in Savannah, in 1966; Luther Rice College, Alexandria, Virginia where he served as Chairman of the Fine Arts Department, Professor of Organ, Piano and Voice, also taught music courses and directed the college choir from 1967- 1973. Franconis Baptist Church, Alexandria, Virginia, as Minister of Music from 1967 - 1973; Minister of Music, Education and Youth - 1974, where he Conducted the graded Choir Program, the Handbell Choir, Youth Activities, Youth Bibly Study, Crafts, Youth Service each third Sunday evening, Chairman of the Youth Council; Education, Charge of visitation, work through Sunday School and Church Training, plan officers and teachers meetings, rallies, etc., Principal of V.B.S., had chapel each week for church kindergarten, had charge of Golden Days Senior Citizens Club.
He attends Associational State meetings whenever possible, attends Ridgecrest for Music Week and Rec Lab in January.
Served Tabernacle Baptist Church, Salem, Virginia as Minister of Music/Education - July 1974 - January 1976, where he conducted a Graded Choir Program, conducted the Handbell Choir, and worked through Sunday School and Church Training Leaders, he served as Principal of the V.B. S., and working with the youth, until the church finds a youth director, organized a Golden Days Senior Citizens Club, attended Associational and State Meetings.
He was a member of the Virginia Mens Chorale, Teacher in Off Campus Extension Courses for the University of Richmond, and served Immanuel Baptist Church, in Savannah, Ga., as Minister of Music/Youth from January 1976 to the present time. His duties included a complete graded choir program, handbell choir, instrument Ensemble, and organized a Golden Gems Senior Citizens Club.
Funeral Services for Rev. King will be held at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 4, 2018 at Immanuel Baptist Church in Savannah, Ga.
Visitation: Saturday, Nov. 3, 2018 at Baker McCullough Funeral Home, Hubert C. Baker Chapel, from 6 - 8 p.m. , 7415 Hodgson Memorial Drive, Savannah, Ga 31406.
