Rev. Lawrence Holst of Skidaway Island passed away on February 18th at the age of 92. Larry was married to Dorothy Iverson until her death in 1982 and they had five children—Martha, Steve, Kris, Dan, and Dave. Larry is survived by his wife of 35 years, Faymarie Brouillard. She has three children—Steve, Diane and Mike. Larry was the Director of Pastoral Care at Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge Illinois for 35 years. He chaired the hospital’s Medical Ethics Committee and became the voice of the hospital on many sensitive issues. He was instrumental in the creation of the Parish Nursing program. Larry was a missionary in Tanzania East Africa. In 1972 he brought his family to the foot of Mt. Kilimanjaro for a year while he established a Pastoral Care program and a mobile medical outreach program to care for remote African villages. As a lifelong Cub’s fan, Larry finally got to celebrate a World Series win at age 86. Above all, Larry cared for people and his family. He was a calming and reassuring presence to those in crisis. Every dinner prayer included “keep us mindful of the needs of others”. He was a voice for the marginalized in society. His contributions made the world a little better. He will be greatly missed.
