Max William Wallace, 82, of Savannah, Georgia passed away at home on September 13, 2022.
Born the son of George and June Wallace on July 31, 1940, in their family home near a small rural community called “Pure Air” in Adair County, Missouri. Max joined the United States Army upon graduating high school. At the age of 22, he “skated” into the love of his life, Sally Sue Fabricius. Married on January 9, 1963, Max and Sally raised six sons together.
Max proudly served both his country and his community for nearly six decades. Max retired, after more than 20 years of service, as a decorated Sergeant First Class from the U.S. Army. He received a Bronze Star for his heroic actions while serving in Vietnam. His military career brought him and his family to Savannah, Georgia where he and Sally fell in love with the beauty of Savannah and decided to make it their permanent residence.
After his military retirement, Max joined the City of Savannah Police Department, and during this time he continued his education to receive a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice. Upon retiring from SPD after serving 20 years protecting the Citizens of Savannah, he and Sally went on to serve as United Nations Peacekeepers in Bosnia, and then with the State Department working for the U.S. Embassies in China and Russia, until returning home to his beloved Savannah in 2013.
In addition to his professional pursuits, Max lived a full life. His personal life was dedicated to his wife and family. Among his hobbies were raising Arabian horses, thrift store shopping, football, especially the Atlanta Falcons and Georgia Bulldogs and spending time with his grandchildren. Having such a large family, he greatly enjoyed get-to-gethers (and never showed up without bringing Popeyes’s chicken). Rarely was there a family gathering that didn’t include some outlandish, cartoon-like story of his childhood, or of the raising of six boys, that kept everyone on the edge of their seat. In his family, the truth was most certainly always stranger than fiction and great fun to be re-lived through the eyes of his children and grandchildren.
Max is survived by his beloved wife of sixty years, Sally; 5 of his 8 siblings Ivy, Nola, Neva, Alta, and Ivan; six sons: Max Jason (Christine), Curtis (Lisa), Brian (Lakeisha), Lincoln, John (Michelle) & Clinton (Christina); twelve grandchildren: Jamie (Robbie), Harrison, William Ryan (Briana), Nicholas, Laura, Ethan, Abigail (Rogelio), Sarah (Micah), Jared, Aiden, Olivia & Teagan; eight great-grandchildren: Hunter, Vivian, Brody, Savannah, Emmaleigh, Rojelio Jr, Elizabeth & Josiah.
