Raymond Lamont Cohen

August 11, 1959 — January 26, 2025

Savannah

Raymond Lamont Cohen, age 65, of Savannah, GA passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, January 26, 2025.

Raymond was born on August 11, 1959 in Savannah, the son of the late Walter and Louise Cohen. He was a lifelong resident of Savannah Ga. He was a 1977 graduate of H.V. Jenkins High School. During high school, he started working for his older brother Danny Cohen at Savannah Driveline & Hydraulics and worked there until he passed. He was very loyal and dedicated to his work. He worked there for 50 years as a project manager, supervisor, and mechanic. Raymond was an outstanding mechanic and worked on drive shafts, hydraulic hoses, cylinders, and more. He served the community with his excellent skillset. He was one of the best mechanics and could figure out a solution to any problem that was thrown his way. Raymond was very crafty and could do just about anything. He even helped his older brother, Thomas Cohen, build his house. He also used his creativity to build a large chime instrument to be used in the percussion section for a local orchestra. It had to have a certain musical pitch and he was able to do it. This is a representation of his talent and generosity. He made something that he would never hear or see in use but knew that others would benefit from it and enjoy his creation.

Raymond was no stranger to anyone and loved his neighbors. He was the type of man that would lend a hand or take the shirt off his back for anyone in need. He would help others but never asked for help in return. Whatever was needed, Raymond either had it or a solution for it.

He loved his chewing gum, mints, and chewing tobacco. He always had a knife and flashlight in his pocket and could sharpen a knife better than most.

Raymond loved to hunt and was an active member of several hunting clubs for many years such as Big Horn Hunting Club, McLaws Hunting Club, Egypt Hunting Club, and Mt Pleasant Hunting Club. He loved to go dog hunting with his older brother, Buddy Cohen. Buddy and Raymond had their own hunting dogs and would also have them compete in Puppy Races, which they won a few. He was an awesome member and even better friend to everyone in the clubs.

At Egypt hunting club, he would love to sit around the fire barrel and shoot the breeze with all the men and their families. After everyone would disperse for the night, he would bring his dog Maggie out and let her get some exercise. He would cook every Saturday night and fix breakfast every Sunday morning. He will be missed in a huge way around the club as he was the center of the comradery and the main reason people were coming to the club on Saturday night. He had a large following and was loved by so many people.

Cooking was a big part of Raymond’s life and was his passion. He loved to cook for his family and friends. He loved to watch people enjoy the meals he prepared. If he was cooking, everyone knew that they would not go hungry. Raymond would say, “If you leave hungry, it’s your own darn fault”, and he would chuckle about it. He shared his joy of cooking and was always willing to teach anyone how to make his dishes. He was most famous for his catfish stew, mac n cheese, chicken and dumplings, green beans, biscuits, and amazing desserts.

He was also known as the $2 man. He would pay people in $2 bills for Christmas & birthday gifts, his hunting club dues, and even a down payment for his green Chevy hunting truck. These bills were fresh off the press and were never circulated.

Above all, he loved spending time with his family during holidays, weekends by the pool, weekly shopping trips to Walmart and Sam’s with his sister, Linda Harper, or just simply coming by for an hour to drop off some food for his family to enjoy.

Every Christmas, the family always looked forward to Raymond giving out chocolate caramel candies. Raymond would enjoy a week off every year with his family on a cruise. He had been cruising for over 40 years and really looked forward to it every year. Raymond loved his family very much, including his beloved dogs ‘Reese’ and ‘Maggie’.

In addition to his parents, Raymond was preceded in death by his brother, William ‘Buddy’ Cohen; sister-in-law, Vickie Cohen; sister-in-law, Jerry Cohen; and brother-in-law, Joseph ‘Terry’ Harper. He is survived by his brother, Walter Thomas Cohen; brother, Danny Ray Cohen (Barbara); sister, Linda Cohen Harper; the following nieces and nephews: Beth Smithberger (Alan), Jennifer Incorvaia, Angie Roberts (Jason), Kim Packer (Michael), David Cohen, Melissa Gower (Jarrod), Amanda Connor (Michael), Steven Cohen, Joey Harper (Kaddie), John Harper, Lindsey Brown (Donald); and many grandnieces and grandnephews.
