Peggy Spillards

d. December 14, 2018

On Friday, December 14, 2018, Hazel Jeanette (Peggy) Spilliards, loving wife and mother of two children, passed away at age 80.  Peggy was a Christian and a life time member of the First Baptist Church of Garden City. Peggy was born on November 30, 1938 in Manning, SC to Horace W. and Portia Thames Shaw.  Her parents moved to Savannah and later settled in Garden City.  She attended Commercial High where she met her high school sweetheart and love of her life, Marvin G. Spilliards.  The two married October 12th, 1956 and settled in Garden City.  Later she attended cosmetology school and opened her own shop on Smith Avenue in Garden City. Peggy was a devoted mother who was always actively involved in her children's interests.  She was active with the Booster Clubs that supported football and cheerleading programs in Garden City.  She coached softball and cheerleading. She opened her home and her heart to so many young people through the years.  She enjoyed cooking, gardening, fishing, crabbing, shrimping and camping.  For years her idea of a great vacation was to load up the car with camping gear and several of Mike and Lisa's friends and take off for Clark Hill.  In later years her favorite vacation spot was Bluffton, SC. where she and Marvin spent time together fishing, shrimping and crabbing. Peggy adoredher three grandchildren, Josh, Lyndsey and Sydney.  "Nanny" was everything a grandmother should be, loving, caring and understanding.  She made sure to spoil them rotten. Peggy was preceded in death by her parents, an infant son Michael, her brothers, Barry, Bill, Lynn, and Michael Shaw, her sister, Mary Shaw Morel, her sister-in-law, Jean Shaw, her nephew, Danny Shaw.  Survivors include her husband of 62 years Marvin Spilliards;son Mike Spilliards (Clarissa) and daughter Lisa Harper (Jimmy); grandchildren, Josh Spilliards, Lyndsey Harper, Sydney Harper; cousin Jo Marshall; sister-in-law Joann Shaw and several nieces and nephews.
