Opal Lucille Justice

March 3, 1936 — April 18, 2022

Opal L. Justice went to be with our Lord on April 18, 2022 at the age of 86. She passed away peacefully at home in her sleep. She was born in 1936 to Byron Lamar and Myrtice Lee Lord in Alamo, Georgia. She Resided in Savannah, Georgia for more than 70 years. She was a faithful and loving wife for 63 years to her husband George Walter Justice Jr., who preceded her in death on April 19, 2015. Together they shared a long life of love and happiness with their five children, thirteen grandchildren, twenty-eight great-grandchildren, and eight great-great-grandchildren.
To everyone who knew and loved her, she was affectionately known as “Mema”. She was a kind and loving person who always said she did not want her obituary or funeral service to be filled with untrue ramblings about her life. So, as promised, this obituary will only include the truth about her life. To many her life would seem plain, even boring, she was not famous or wealthy. She was never a world traveler; in fact, most of her life was spent at home with all her grandkids. With more than 40 grandbabies to love on, she was always busy rocking someone, raising someone, teaching someone, cooking for someone, and praying for someone. She was the prayer warrior of her family. No matter the day or what was happening in the world, her kids could be confident that Mema prayed for them that day. To some people that may seem trivial but to her kids it has been everything. It is what we will miss most about her. She was an amazing “old” southern cook. She could feed a small army like it was nothing at all, and somehow there was always enough for everyone. Her heart was as big as the sun, and her love for Jesus was something she made sure all her children could see. She was a faithful member of Wilder Memorial Baptist Church, where she took many of her grandbabies to church. She made sure that they knew Jesus and that He died for them. Her life was the greatest example of compassion and love to all who knew her. It has been said that God sends angels to earth disguised as people and we truly believe Mema was one of them. We are rejoicing as she has returned to Heaven to receive her crown. To say she is and will always be missed just does not seem enough. Her presence can never be replaced and we are all left with an emptiness that nothing in this world could ever fill. We thank God for blessing us with such a special angel and we look forward to the day we see her again.
Her husband, her parents, one brother, and two sisters preceded her in death. She is survived by her children; Larry, Perry (Irene), Lynne, Lisa (Mike), and Karen (Kirk, Gary); her grand, great grand, and great-great grandchildren as well as one brother, one sister, many nieces and nephews and a host of other family and friends. The family would like to offer special thanks to the women of Comfort Keepers Home Care for the wonderful caregivers they provided to us, as well as the women of Compassus Hospice for being compassionate nurses who gently cared for Mema. We must also thank some of “Mema’s Angels” Chatham Crawford, Chelsea Hendrix, and Crystal Morgan for helping with absolutely anything we needed. We pray a special blessing on all of the amazing women God sent to help us.
In keeping with her simple, yet beautiful life, we will celebrate Mema’s return to Heaven with a graveside service on Thursday, April 21, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. at Hillcrest Abbey West Cemetery on Dean Forest Road in Savannah, Georgia. In lieu of flowers, the family ask that any remembrances be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, Scottish Rite Children’s Hospital, or charity of choice. Friends may sign the online register book at bakermccullough.com.
