Nita Mae Wonderley

December 27, 1929 — November 7, 2023

Nita Mae Landrum Wonderley, age 93, entered Heaven while sleeping peacefully at home on Tuesday, November 7, 2023.

Nita was born in Graham, Texas, to Arabelle Simons and Julius (Dutch) Landrum on December 27, 1929. Soon after her birth the family moved to a small farm in Landrum Community of Ovette, near Laurel, Mississippi. She studied nursing at Touro Infirmary in New Orleans, Louisiana. After graduation she continued working at Touro Infirmary as a registered nurse, where she met her husband, Charles, when she tripped over his outstretched feet while entering her patient’s, his mother’s, hospital room. She worked as a nurse, as hospital staff or private duty most of her adult life, ending her career as the registrar of the Professional Nurses Registry.

Nita enjoyed sewing, embroidery, and working in her garden, but her primary passion was serving Jesus by serving people. She served in her local church wherever she lived (Ovette, MS; New Orleans, LA; Houston, TX; Vicksburg, MS) and at Windsor Forest Baptist Church in Savannah, GA from 1966, and in many positions, including WMU, GAs, library, sermons on tape, visitation and support of sick and shut ins. She was an active member of the Gleaners Sunday School Class. When training for Stephen Ministry was made available she joined, and completed, the inaugural course. She continued visiting the sick and shut-ins into her 90s, stopping only when the pandemic lockdown closed doors to visits.

Nita is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Charles Robert Wonderley, her infant son, Charles Robert Wonderley, Jr., and her sisters, Rita Landrum Stringer and Alice Landrum Hankins.

Nita is survived by two daughters, Charlene (Mrs. Lyle) Maciejewski and Sandy (Mrs. Mark) Morton; two sons, Phil Wonderley and Kenny Wonderley; six grandchildren, Lana Marie (Mrs. Stephan) Peralta, David Wonderley, Rob Morton, Michael Wonderley, Sarah Maciejewski, and Astrid Wonderley; and two great-grandchildren, Eden Stark and Evan Stark.

Visitation will be held 1:00 p.m. Saturday, November 11, 2023 at Windsor Forest Baptist Church, 12521 White Bluff Road, Savannah, Georgia 31419. A funeral service will begin at 2:00 p.m.

The burial will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, November 13, 2023 at Bonaventure Cemetery, 330 Bonaventure Road, Savannah, Georgia 31404.
