Nancy Thomas Smith

October 4, 1944 — February 8, 2024

Nancy Thomas Smith, age 79, passed away Thursday, February 8, 2024.

She was a life-long resident of Savannah, Georgia. She was the daughter of Frances and Raymond Thomas Jr.. She loved both her parents, but she was a daddy’s girl! She graduated from Savannah High School in 1962 and after a carefree summer, she began her career as a secretary with Savannah Police Department and Savannah Leisure Services.

Later, Nancy went to work for the City of Savannah Fire Department as the Fire Chief’s Administrative Assistant where she served under four Fire Chiefs Chief John M. Schroder, Chief Joseph Hobby, Chief Carl Plaugher, and Chief Paul Taylor. She retired in 2003 after serving almost 30 years at the Fire Department and almost 36 years total with the city.

Nancy was a methodist. She was baptized at Grace United Methodist Church and a charter member of Wilmington Island United Methodist Church. In 2001, she transferred her membership to St Luke United Methodist Church. She served as church secretary at St. Luke for two and a half years. She was a member of the Ageless Wonders and participated with this group's flower ministry. She recently moved membership to White Bluff Global Methodist Church.

She belonged to the Wednesday morning Bible Study. She was also a member of South Georgia Coastal Emmaus Community since 2003.

Nancy is survived by her daughter and son in law, Kelli and Jackie Hamilton; her granddaughter, Sarah Hamilton Williams (Grayson); and her grandson, Jake Hamilton; great granddaughter, Annabeth Grace Williams, and another baby due this spring; her sister, Joan Thomas Holloway; her brother, Ray Thomas Jr. (Sandra); and her niece and nephews, Karen Holloway Prevatt (Mike), Dale Holloway (Sheree), Christopher Thomas, Jeff Thomas (Debbie).

Nancy was quick to help anyone who was in need and was usually the first to provide meals and care for those who were experiencing hardship. She loved to be a blessing to others and was known for sharing perfect words of comfort to those in need of her ministry. Through her sickness, Nancy never stopped praising Jesus and loving others.

Nancy loved her firefighters, although she would admit she didn’t know many of them, but when she saw them in the grocery stores, she would always stop them, introduce herself and tell them, “they were her boys.”
