Mr. George H. Vickery III, 92, passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by family, Tuesday, September 13, 2022.
George was born to George H. Vickery, Jr. and Eva Doyle Vickery on February 19, 1930, in Savannah, GA. He is predeceased by his mother, father, and brother James Vickery. George grew up on 42nd Street in Savannah, GA. He graduated from Commercial High School in January 1949. He left Savannah August 1950 with his Dog Company Marine Reserve to go to California for 6 weeks training and then was sent to Korea.
He was a Purple Heart Recipient due to combat in Korea. He was a member of Cokesbury United Methodist Church in 1980, member of Wilmington Island Methodist Church and in 2007 joined Alpha United Methodist Church in Bloomingdale. George and Betty were married at Alpha United Methodist Church May 3, 1952 and celebrated their 70th anniversary this year.
George enjoyed playing golf and won many trophies over the years. He was the 37th member of Savannah Quarters Golf Club where he resided with his wife. He was a member of Dog Company Marines, Marine Corps League, American Legion 184, Cobra Club, Geechee Dance Club, and Star Light Dance Club.
George was by trade an electrician. He later studied electronics and TV repair. He and Betty founded Vickery TV Sales and Service retiring in 1998, after 40 years in the business.
His greatest pride was his children. He was a devoted husband and father to his three children and grandfather to his grandchildren and great grandchildren. They all loved him and will miss him deeply.
George is survived by his loving wife Betty E. Vickery; daughter, Cynthia Sauers (Dr. David Sauers, Sr.); son, Michael Vickery, RN (Mary Vickery); daughter, Lisa Meaker (Thomas Meaker, PhD); sister, Marie Milligan; his grandchildren, David Sauers, Jr. (Christie), Stephen Sauers, Sr. (Angela), Kathryn Sauers Dukes (Billy), Bryan Vickery, Adam Vickery (Lisa), Matthew Vickery, Mandy Bryan (Andy), Melanie Riffle (Joseph), Kayla Frady (Andy), Amber Meaker (Javier); as well as 20 great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. The family would like to acknowledge Jackie Jordan, CNA, who provided him compassionate and loving care in his home since February 19, 2022, the day of his birthday.
The visitation will be Saturday, September 17, 2022, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. followed by the service at 1:00 p.m. at Baker McCullough Funeral Home located at 7415 Hodgson Memorial Drive in Savannah. The entombment will follow at Hillcrest Abbey East, Trinity Chapel Mausoleum, located at 1600 Wheaton Street in Savannah.
The family suggest any remembrances be made in his memory to Alpha United Methodist Church.
