Mildred M. Rivers

d. November 26, 2016

Mildred Abney Rivers

After a brief illness under the care of Savannah Hospice, on Friday November 25, 2016 at approximately 4 pm Mildred transitioned from this earthly place to her new home.
Mildred, the third of eight siblings was born March 6, 1938 in Johnston, S.C. to the proud parents of Mr. and Mrs. James Abney who preceded her in death.
Mildred graduated from Alfred E. Beach High School, Class of 1955. Upon graduation Mildred left Savannah heading north to the "Big Apple", New York City. Wanting to further her education in later years, she decided to go back to school and received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration from Mercy College in Upstate New York.
She was employed by the State of New York Department of Corrections for many years in an administrative capacity. Mildred was very involved in politics and strongly supported the Democratic Party. She also had great passion for the community in which she lived and served many volunteer hours in various capacities. She was a member of CWA Local 1180 of New York City. A few years after retiring she decided to move back home to Savannah.
It is nothing like a family gathering and no one could compare to Mildred's cooking. The family loved to gather, laugh, talk, share stories and eat the best cooked food ever!!!!
She leaves to cherish her memories: one son Craig Rivers and a loving, caring and devoted daughter Terri Rivers both of New York City, three grandchildren, Gerald (Terrance) Rivers of Atlanta, Georgia, Dennis Cohen, Jr., ( Deisy) of New York City and Kyle Rivers of New York City, one great grand-son, Haven Rivers of Atlanta, Georgia. Sisters and brothers: Grace Abney Barnett, James Calvin Abney (Jackie), and Carnell Abney all of Savannah, Sara Abney Barnett of New York, Roland H. Abney, Decatur, Georgia and Miriam Abney Rodney (Algernon), Ocoee, Florida. One goddaughter, Brenda Y. Parker. Along with a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins. Two dear and devoted friends, Nathaniel (Nat) Johnson and Charles (Bunk) Black both of Savannah
We the family, would like to give special recognition to Sharon A. Barnett (niece). She cared for her aunt as if she was her very own mother.
Mildred would say, my life has been great, I have always planned for this day, don't be sad, we all must travel this path. Please remember me for my works and my words. You never had to worry what I was thinking. I loved life and lived my life with no regrets. It was time for me to let go!
There will be no funeral or public visitation.
