Michael Winfield Helmey, 66, passed away on November 21, 2021 in Pooler, Ga.
Born on July 1, 1955 in Georgia he was the only child of Clifford Winfield and Mary B. Helmey. He graduated from Calvary Day School in 1974, among their 1st senior class. A linebacker for the Cavaliers, he went on to play football for Young Harris College before an injury ended his athletic career. He returned to Savannah to graduate with a Bachelors in Finance from Armstrong in 1978. He enjoyed a career in logistics and distribution, working for Pier 1 Imports where he attained the position of Director of Distribution before retiring. Michael was a loving and involved father. A lifelong learner, history buff, savvy investor, and graduate of the Center for Creative Leadership. He loved taking long walks to stay fit and living near the water. He will be remembered for his sharp wit, sense of humor, and instant likeability.
He is survived by his daughter, Lauren Polk; his son and daughter in law, Philip and Kristian Helmey; grandchildren, Ethan Polk and Charlotte Helmey; and his wife of 26 years Cyndy Helmey, all of Savannah.
He was preceded by his father, Clifford Winfield Helmey; his mother, Mary Bevill Helmey; and his Aunt, Lillian Lytle Bevill.
