Melvin Willie Johnson, 80, of Savannah, GA, under the care of hospice went to be with Jesus in the arms of his loving wife on Saturday, September 7, 2019.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Elsworth J. and Lottie Mae Morris Johnson; three brothers, Jim Johnson, Loy Johnson, and Herman Johnson; four sisters, Luree Johnson, Emma Jean Stanley, Geraldine Roberts, and Patricia Johnson.
Melvin was born and raised in Sylvania, GA and moved to Savannah where he met the love of his life and started a family. He worked at Union Camp Riverside paper mill, where he retired after thirty-eight years. He was an amazing football, basketball, and baseball coach for several years where he touched so many lives on and off the field. He was an avid outdoorsman who had an undying love for fishing.
Melvin was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
He is survived by his wife, Myrtice Johnson; two sons, Tony Johnson (Sue) and Shannon Johnson; two daughters, Terry Johnson and Wendy Turner (Keith); two sisters, Jenette Duncun (Arthur) and Linda Burke (Jackie); sister-in-law, Questie Johnson (Herman); seven grandchildren, James VanHorn, Scott VanHorn (Mary), Nikki Little (Kara), Tiffany Kreun (Travis), Natalie McCalister (Daniel), Ethan Johnson, and Zach Johnson; several great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 5pm to 8pm Wednesday September 11, 2019 at Baker McCullough Funeral Home, Hubert C. Baker Chapel.
Graveside Service: 2pm Friday September 13, 2019 at Forest Lawn Memory Garden.
In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to American Heart Association or a charity of your choice.
The family would like to give a special thanks to granddaughters Nikki and Kara for their loving care during his final days.
