Max Theo Johns

d. June 17, 2016

Max Theo Johns, Ph.D., 82, passed away on Friday, June 17, 2016. Max was born in Emanuel County, Georgia, descending from ancestors who were some of the earliest settlers on the frontier in Georgia: yeoman farmers, not slave-holding planters. They included two Revolutionary War soldiers and several great great grandfathers who served in the Civil War, two of whom died in that War. Though Dr. Johns was born in Emanuel County, he was raised in Chatham County, to which his family moved in 1941.
Max Johns was a Korean War veteran, serving in the U.S. Air Force. Upon discharge he embarked on an academic career beginning at Armstrong Junior College in Savannah. He earned his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in economics at the University of Georgia in 1959 and 1960 and his Ph.D. at the University of Pennsylvania in 1970. He taught economics in college for the first half of this career, including the University of Georgia, Oglethorpe University, colleges in Louisiana, New York City, and New Jersey, as well as Armstrong State and Savannah State. The second half of Dr. Johns' career was served as economist for the U.S. Treasury Department in Washington, D.C. He retired from the Treasury Department in 1989.
Max had many serious intellectual interests, including literature, philosophy, politics, the science of cosmology, and Christian spirituality. He wrote a small amount of poetry and carved many small sculptures. He had a deep love of music which reached from Bluegrass to popular, blues and jazz to classical composers, especially Bach, Palestrina, Purcell, and Byrd. In his latter years he researched and wrote in genealogy, Emanuel County history and Pooler history, completing his Johns Family History, The Webbs of Kemp, Original Citizens of Emanuel County, and Early Citizens of Pooler. Max's final and most serious endeavor was his spiritual development. Having studied Christian spirituality for many years he finally wrote Daily Meditative Prayer, including Annotations and Foundational Understandings.
Max returned to Pooler, his boyhood home, in 1998 and married Billie Martin Bazemore, with whom he enjoyed a most satisfying marriage. Max and Billie enjoyed many things together, including genealogy, literature, films, music, and travel in their motor home. He was a faithful member of Rothwell Baptist Church, Pooler.
Max is preceded in death by his wife, Billie Bazemore-Johns.
Max is survived by his children Kittye (Kent) Johns Sears, Max (E. Christie) Johns, Jr., Karl (Christine) Johns, Mike (Debbie) Bazemore, Randy (Susan) Bazemore, Betsy (Jimmy) Bazemore DeLoach, , Tatiana Defriece, Nancy Wersick and Alan Butsch, sisters Ruby Smith and Gail Elliott of Garden City, as well as numerous grand and great-grand children and nieces and nephews. He was loved and will be missed by all who survive him.
A memorial service will be held at Baker McCullough Funeral Home Garden City Chapel on Monday, June 20, at 11am. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to The Restoration Fund Rothwell Baptist Church, Pooler, GA, or Hospice Savannah.
