Mary Sullivan Hargroves

Mary Sullivan Hargroves, 86, of Savannah, passed away suddenly on September 8, 2017, surrounded by her family. A lifelong resident of Savannah who graduated from Commercial High School in December 1948, Mary married the love of her life, Pete, on January 7, 1949, and enjoyed 68 wonderful years together. She attended and was active in the Christian and Missionary Alliance (First Alliance) Church throughout her entire life. As a dedicated and faithful servant, Mary held numerous positions in the church, but none closer to her heart than teaching the Primary Sunday School class (grades 1- 3) with her husband for many years.

After her children started school Mary became very involved in the Georgia Parent & Teacher Association (PTA) where she held various offices at local, district, state and national levels. She was named a Lifetime Member and Founder. One of her outstanding achievements was helping organize and administer eye tests for every kindergartener in Chatham County in the early 1960's. Mary worked tirelessly with numerous charities, including March of Dimes, Cancer Society, Heart Association, and United Way. She was known for her loving, compassionate, kind, happy nature and her wonderful sense of humor. Mary never met a stranger and was always a champion of the underdog and downtrodden. Her entire life revolved around her faith, her husband, her children, and her family, rarely thinking of herself.

Mary is preceded in death by her parents, George W. and Maggie Bowers Sullivan, two sons, James G. Jr. (Little Pete), James Michael Hargroves, and a granddaughter, Lauren Elizabeth Hargroves. She is survived by her husband James G. (Pete) Hargroves, daughter Tammie Maria Hargroves, daughter-in-law Deborah Hargroves Staab, grandson James Matthew Hargroves (Chelsea), grand-puppy Tiger Maximus Hargroves, brother William E. (Bill) Sullivan, sister Dottye S. Hannan and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. Friday, September 15, 2017 at Baker McCullough Funeral Home Hubert C. Baker Chapel and the Funeral Service will be 1:00 p.m. Saturday, September 16, 2017 in the Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Bonaventure Cemetery.
