Martha Elizabeth Chapman Henderson entered eternal life on Tuesday, July 30, 2024.
Martha was born on January 29, 1940 to L. E. and Lois Chapman. She grew up in Port Wentworth and attended Port Wentworth Elementary School. She graduated in the last graduating class of Commercial High School.
After graduation, Martha attended Southeastern Bible College in Lakeland, Florida pursuing a degree in vocal and church music. During a trip home during her junior year, she was involved in an almost -fatal car wreck and was hospitalized for several weeks. Under the recommendation of her physician, she was unable to return to school because of the trauma she had experienced.
It was during her recuperation and return to the local workforce that she met the love of her life, Conrad Henderson - affectionately known as "Bubba". Martha and Conrad were united in marriage on Sunday, August 30, 1964 on what must have been the hottest day that had ever been or has ever been! The happy couple began planning for their future and on January 22, 1968, they welcomed their only child, Melissa. Fifteen years later, they would experience the heartache of a miscarriage, but were always grateful for the privilege of being parents to Missy.
Missy was the apple of their eye - UNTIL Christopher and Jessica were born. Martha and Conrad L-O-V-E-D those grandkids and doted on them as all good grandparents do!
Martha was a charter member of Bacon Park Assembly of God (now Radiant Life Christian Fellowship) and served there faithfully for over 40 years. In addition to working as Pastor Cameron Stanton's secretary for many years, she also served as the choir director.
Her love of music never faded. As a young adult, she sang in the church choir, several trios, other gospel groups and she has now been reunited with her duet partner - Sister Billye Stanton. What a time they must be having in heaven!
She is preceded in death by her parents, L. E. and Lois Chapman, her husband of 43 years, Conrad and her sister, Rosemary Chapman-Snider.
Martha is survived by her daughter, Missy. Her grandchildren, Christopher, Ben, Jessica and her great-granddaughter, Brielle. She is also survived by several in-laws, nieces and nephews, many many cousins and dear friends.
Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, August 3, 2024 at Noon at Radiant Life Christian Fellowship, 5619 Skidaway Road Savannah, GA 31406-2251. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
