Marsala Florenz Monteverde was born on August 13, 1943 in New York City, New York. She was the 2nd of two children to the late Fred Monteverde and Enid Campbell. She was raised by her grandmother Florence Sterling in Harlem, NYC. She graduated from Yorkville Vocational in 1960 specializing in nursing. Had children, married and finally settled down in Queens, NYC where she stayed for roughly 18 years. In 1997 after several vacations to Las Vegas loving the weather and obviously the gambling she moved there and stayed for 20 years. From living on the east coast to the west she always worked in a medical facility. To retiring from St. Joseph's Hospital to going back to work at Prestige nursing home she never wandered away from helping people who needed it. Marsala passed away at Desert Spring Hospital in Las Vegas at 74 years old fighting up until her last breath. Marsala is preceded in death by her grandmother Florence Sterling, two aunts Lynn & Adella (aka aunt Dotty), her mother Enid, and sister Mary. Marsala is the last of a long line of strong Jamaican women!
Marsala leaves behind three children Mark Monteverde, Dina James and Dawn Harrington. She also leaves behind seven grandchildren Jessica, Matthew, Tatiana, Elle, Annalese, Dawnesha and "her" baby Delayna. Two great grandchildren Ramon & Zander, two God-children Marvia Alston & Nicole Londy, two son in laws Albert James & Michael Harrington and over 40 years of friendships with Lee Witt, Joan Lloyd, Ed Hill and Cathy Wilson. In addition to several cousins she has made numerous friends over her many years of nursing.
Those who have known Marsala know of her strength & endurance, her compassion for taking care of people and her feisty outspoken personality. She loved her family with every fiber of her being, especially her children. She was so passionate about nursing, it was her God given calling. Marsala was five feet of real energy, what you saw is what you got. She held no punches and lived her life as she saw fit. Simply put Marsala was a tough cookie. She was honest, humble, kind and always had faith in God putting him first always. A devout catholic she loved the Lord.
A gathering for family and friends will be held Friday, March 9, 2018 from 12:00 p.m. til 1:30 p.m. at the Funeral Home with a service beginning at 1:30 p.m.. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Abbey West Cemetery.
