Mark Baber Johnson, age 63, loving father of Madeline, and adoring husband to Peggy, passed away at home in the afternoon of October 6, 2022 after a courageous battle with cancer, with
Peggy, Madeline, and future son-in-law Mitchell at his side.
Mark is also survived by his brothers; William (Bill) Johnson Jr. (Jane), Paul Johnson (Angela); nieces; nephews; extended family; hundreds of beloved students; Savannah Wind Symphony
members; fraternity brothers; and many dear friends.
It is impossible to summarize a man who means so much to so many. The middle son of William H. (Bill) Sr. and Elizabeth B. (Betty) Johnson, both predeceased, Mark grew up in Brandenberg, Kentucky. He was a loving protective father and husband who enjoyed family gatherings. He also enjoyed classic cars, especially VWs, history and family heritage, playing golf and cards, and his LSU Tigers.
Mark’s exemplary career as a professional musician, conductor, educator, mentor, and friend has created a legacy of influence and inspiration for generations present and future. He is the
recipient of numerous awards, scholarships, honors, memberships, and recognition of achievement as a superb musician, conductor, and leader. The best way we can honor Mark is to support and preserve school music programs, attend live concerts, work hard, play hard, wear purple and gold whenever you can, be generous with your time and talents, take good care of your family and friends, be a good neighbor, and do your best to bring out the best in others.
The family will be receiving friends, Saturday, October 22, 2022 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Baker McCullough Funeral Home, 7415 Hodgson Memorial Drive, Savannah, GA 31406. A memorial service for Mark will be held following the visitation.
Please wear purple, gold, or a combination of both if you can! Geaux Tigers!
