A loving, wife, mother, and human dynamo, Marjorie Merlene Maddox passed away peacefully at Azalealand Nursing & Rehabilitation in Savannah, GA on September 24th, 2023. She was born in Lewistown, Pennsylvania September 29, 1942 to Marjorie May Henry and Merle Steven Henry. Her early childhood was spent in Milroy, Pennsylvania while her mother lived with her beloved aunt and uncle, Mary and Faye Cunningham.
Marge met her future husband and best friend Jim during their Junior year at Coventry High School. After graduating from high school, she moved into her own apartment and worked at Ohio Bell Telephone in downtown Akron until she and Jim were married in 1965. She continued to work for Ohio Bell in Columbus, supporting them while Jim completed his degree at Ohio State University, College of Dentistry. After graduation in 1968, Jim began active service in the US Navy Dental Corps and Marge became a proud “Navy Wife” with duty stations from Maine to Florida, two tours of sea duty and two lengthy overseas assignments in Europe..
She continually supported the Navy community wherever she went. She established a Pre-School at Winter Harbor, Maine. At Rota, Spain, she hosted dozens of social and community events, was a valued member of the DODDS School Board and wrote a Travel Guide for incoming Navy families. She served as Command Ombudsman in Naples, Italy as well as personally conducting a recordbreaking fund-raising for a NATO event during the Gulf War.
Marge attended Pensacola Junior College and attained a BA degree. She was a skilled interior decorator and top performer in furniture sales for many years in Orlando.
In Savannah, in 1995 she began a very successful career in Real Estate, as a Buyer’s Agent, with multiple awards and advanced designations, retiring in 2011.
She is survived by Jim, her loving husband of 58 years, son Jason S. Maddox of Plantation, Florida, son Brian K. Maddox, daughter-in-law Jeanine, granddaughter Emma, and grandson Jamie of Harrisonburg, Virginia and sister Linda K. Evans of Akron, Ohio. She was a loving and supportive wife and mother, providing her sons with an amazing role model and her husband with a steadfast loyal partner.
No Funeral services will be held. The family will have a private Celebration of Life later in the year. In lieu of Flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Humane Society of Greater Savannah or America’s Second Harvest of Coastal Georgia.
