Marie Hannon Fritts was born December 13, 1929, and entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, July 25, 2023. Faith and family provided strength throughout Marie's 93 years. Her children, grandchildren and friends admired her grace, sweet personality, sense of style and her artistic skills.
Marie was predeceased by her husband of almost 69 years, David Hilton Fritts. Other family members who predeceased her were her parents, John and Bertha Hannon, and siblings: Rachel Poitevint, Margaret Cribb and John C. Hannon, Jr.
Marie is survived by daughters, Lynn Fritts; Susan Landy (Chuck); son, Philip Fritts; grandchildren include, Steffan Legasse, Amanda Fritts Gunkel (Austin), Ria Fritts, Kason Fritts (Whitney), David E. Fritts and Zachary Landy (Anna). She is also survived by her siblings Earlene Proctor, Gail Snipes, Hermon Hannon (Frankie) and Grady Hannon (Eunice) as well as several great grandchildren, sisters-in-law and many nieces and nephews.
A native of Worth County, Georgia, Marie was a 1947 graduate of Sumner High School. She was proud to serve as a registered nurse for many years and completed her nursing degree in 1950, at Atlanta's Grady Memorial Hospital of Nursing. During her first job after graduation at Emory Hospital, she met her future husband, David. They married on June 8, 1951, in Glenn Memorial Chapel on the campus of Emory.
After moving to Savannah, she worked as a nurse in various capacities including as a nurse at Continental Can Corp infirmary in Port Wenworth; she also worked as a nurse at Candler Hospital in Savannah. While her children were growing up, she worked as a private duty RN; later Marie was a nurse for the Traveling Red Cross Program as well as a nurse for Hospice Savannah until she retired in 1995.
Marie was exceptionally gifted at designing and creating clothing and other beautiful projects. She enjoyed being a member of the Home Makers Club of Savannah and won numerous first place prizes for her creations. Marie loved traveling, shopping, cooking healthy meals for her family and trying new recipes. Reading was another activity she enjoyed, and recently, she read the entire bible again. Known for her superb memory, Marie was a repository of family history.
A longtime member of Aldersgate Methodist Church, Marie was a Sunday School teacher, and served on the budget committee. In recent years, she attended Wesley Monumental Methodist Church with her husband and daughter, Lynn.
Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, September 16, 2023 at Wesley Monumental Methodist Church, 429 Abercorn Street, Savannah, GA 31401. Visitation and reception in the church social hall to follow service.
