Marcia Buchanan Esch

d. October 5, 2017

Marcia Oglesby deJarnette Buchanan Esch, of Atlanta GA, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family at Hospice Savannah on October 4, 2017.  She was born on April 28, 1942 in Elberton, GA. Marcia is preceded in death by her parents George Thomas Oglesby and Josephine Fortson Oglesby of Elberton, GA.  She was also preceded in death by James Litton deJarnette, Jr. and Joseph Douglas Buchanan, Jr.

Marcia graduated from Elbert County High School in 1960.  She attended Lander College in Greenwood, South Carolina and the University of Georgia.  After moving to Atlanta, she worked at Piedmont Southern Life Insurance Company and in 1973 helped establish Piedmont Associates, Inc. where she worked many tireless hours.

Mums, as she was affectionately called by her family, was an energetic and devoted daughter, sister, mother, wife, and grandmother. She was a fervent Georgia Bulldog fan who attended almost every home game for the past 40 years.  She took great pleasure in cultivating her yard overlooking the Chattahoochee River which resulted in a botanical masterpiece. She was a gracious hostess and always welcomed friends and family into her home.  Marcia was a fun-loving, one-of-a-kind, Southern Lady who never met a stranger. She genuinely loved other people and as a result, people loved her back.  She will be missed.

Marcia is survived by her husband William James Esch of Atlanta, GA, and her loyal siblings Ethel Oglesby Horton of St. Simons Island, GA and George Thomas Oglesby Jr. (Elaine) of Elberton, GA. Also surviving are her devoted daughter, Michelle deJarnette Greene and husband Bruce William Greene Jr., along with her grandchildren Bruce William Greene III and Mary Baynes Greene who were her pride and joy.  In addition, Marcia is survived by stepchildren Julien Buchanan Cole (Jim) of Jefferson, GA and Joseph D. Buchanan III of Marietta, GA, his children Henry and Andrew, and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.

A graveside service is scheduled for Saturday October 7, 2017 at 11am at Bonaventure Cemetery in Savannah, GA.  In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Hospice Savannah, 1352 Eisenhower Drive, Savannah, GA 31406 or Isle of Hope United Methodist Church, 412 Parkersburg Road, Savannah, GA 31406.
