Mamie Wade Flanders Canales Chandler, 80, passed away Tuesday, October 19, 2021, at St. Joseph’s Hospital after a courageous battle with challenging health conditions.
Mamie was born in Swainsboro, GA to the late Morris Lee “Bud”, and Marguerite Wade Flanders on October 2, 1941. A graduate of Savannah High School class of 1959, Mamie was a true beauty queen and proudly held the title of Miss Hunter Air Force Base 1958.
She was predeceased by husbands George Canales and Henry J. Chandler, her beautiful infant daughter, companion Jose Pena, sister Cynthia Kersey, and grandmother Sally Phillips Wade.
Mamie is survived by sons George M. Canales and Carey F. Canales (Karen), granddaughters Continelia “Conni” Canales Reynolds (Michael) and Caleigh Ann Canales, great-grandchildren Cason Reynolds, Reagan Reynolds, James Whaley Rentiers V, and Parker Rentiers, sister Linda Bishop, nieces and nephews Michael Bishop (Patrice), Christie McElmurray (Richard), Chris Bishop (Tonya), Heather Cloud (Jason), Dennis “Denny” J. Chandler (Sally), and several great nieces and nephews.
Mamie was employed by St. Joseph’s/Candler Hospital for more than 45 years where she received the prestigious McAuley Award for exemplifying the mission and values of the hospital. She was the past president of the Ladies Auxiliary - Knights of Columbus Council #5588. In the mid 1970’s she was a Cub Scout Den Mother. Mamie was a devout catholic with a great love for the Irish Catholic Community, shown by her presence driving Mr. Chandler in his restored 1976 Cadillac El Dorado Convertible with Old Fort Irish proudly displayed on the doors in Savannah’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade. She also enjoyed boating, crabbing, fishing, and playing slots while cruising the Caribbean.
In addition, the family would like to publicly thank Gloria Jordan for accompanying Mamie on her many trips to Atlanta Emory St. Joseph’s Hospital, Doctors Edward P. Chen, Hien Thong, Michael D. Mullins, Susan Mahany, James Lindley, Mark Murphy, Eirik Svennevik, and Ryon Poston for the excellent care that she received, and all of her friends and extended family for their continued prayers and support.
The family will receive friends at Baker McCullough Funeral Home on Tuesday, October 26, 2021, from 5:00-7:00pm with a Rosary to follow at 7:00pm. A Memorial Mass will be held at Blessed Sacrament Church on Wednesday, October 27, 2021, at 11:00am. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Blessed Sacrament Church or St. Joseph’s/Candler Health Systems Foundations.
