On Sunday, March 8, 2020, Leroy Douglas, Jr. passed away at Memorial Hospital due to serious medical complications. He was born June 10, 1939 to the late Leroy Douglas, Sr. and Mrs. Lucille Singleton-Collins.
He leaves to cherish his memories his wife of 31 years, Mrs. Willie M. Douglas; two daughters, Mrs. Wanda Douglas Holmes (Joseph), and Mrs. Tonya Douglas Gordon; three sons, Ba Ba Tunde J. Douglas, David Young, Jr. (Katrina), and Lyndon Craig Ward (Cherry); 13 grands and 10 great-grands; and a host of grand nieces, nephews, and 2nd cousins from far and near.
He was a 1958 graduate of Alfred Ely Beach High School and attended Savannah State College. He serves in the United States Army. While serving his tour of duty, he was accepted as a member of the U.S. Seventh Army Chorus,as a second tenor and baritone singer and soloist. He has traveled 48 states and Europe. He became a professional singer. He traveled all over the world with the Wings Over Jordan Choir (noted singers of Negro Spirituals) for many years. He also appeared in many concerts locally.
Returning to Savannah, Mr. Douglas joined the Most Worshipful Prince Hall Free and Accepted Masons Jurisdiction of Georgia. He became a member of Mt. Moriah Lodge No. 15 in 1961 and remained an active and dedicated member until the time of his passing. In 1979, he became a member of Omar Temple No. 21 of the Ancient Egyptian Arabic Order Nobles of the Mystic Shrine of North and South America and Jurisdictions Inc. Shriners.
In addition, he was a youth mentor. He taught them the proper tricks of the trade in riding, grooming, and care of horses. His biggest challenge and joy was organizing football, basketball, soccer, and softball teams.He showed them that these were safe and structured activities that they could become involved with.
He also coached the Omar Temple No. 21 Cobras team. In 1976, he organized Omar Temple No. 21 first Youth Mini Mounted Patrol Group which was the first in the State of Georgia, winning 1st Place nationally, competing with other youth from various states. He organized Omar Temple No. 21 Mounted Patrol in 1996.
Other accomplishments and awards received: The Benjamin F. Griffith Volunteer Appreciation Award (1991), Region Three Gala Day Egyptian & Arabic Participation (1992), Honorary Past Illustrious Potentate from Imperial Council (1995), inducted into the Legion of Honor at the 105th Imperial Council Session, Appointed as Imperial Deputy Director of Imperial Mounted Patrol on November 20, 2002, and receiver Life Membership given by Imperial Council session (2009). He received many other awards and recognitions that are too numerous to mention.
Although physically gone from us, he will always remain a big part of many peoples lives. His influence, guidance and lessons will vibrantly live on for years to come.
