Lawrence Millard Fort, Sr., 91, of Savannah, died Wednesday, Mar 22, 2017, at his residence, under the care of Hospice Savannah.

He was born on April 20, 1925 in Guyton, Georgia, the son of the late Lawrence D. and Ivy Dewitt Fort. He was a graduate of Guyton High School, Class of 1942. Lawrence was a veteran of WW II, having served in the US Army, from 1943 - 1945, and was awarded the Purple Heart. He married Sophie Elizabeth (Betty) Humphries on May 25, 1946, at Trinity United Methodist Church in Savannah .He worked for the Central of Georgia Railway/Southern Railway/Norfolk Southern railways for 42 years, and upon retiring in 1985, moved to D.A.V. Island. Lawrence was a member of Trinity Chapel United Methodist Church on Tybee Island, and was a member of the monthly Prayer Breakfast. He was a member of DAV, Chapter 8 and MOPH, Chapter 596. He held many leadership positions within both organizations, including serving as Commander of each and he was Veteran of the Year.

He enjoyed fishing and shrimping, volunteering for various veterans organizations and serving as vice-chair and chairperson of DAV Island. He also enjoyed spending time outdoors, walking and taking care of his house and yard and their community.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Fort; two sons, Lawrence Millard Fort, Jr. (Linda) and Danny Robert Fort (Nina); five grandchildren, Kerry Coursey (Jamie), Alison Bayes (Mike), Carla Dockery (Christopher), Sara Fort, Maria Lauman (Mark); eight great-grandchildren, Peyton Coursey, Avery, Ryan and Matthew Bayes, Kaitlyn and Taylor Dockery, Levi Fort and Mark Lauman, Jr.; Siblings, Lucille Seckinger, Priss Marshall and Leon Fort; many nieces and nephews.

Remembrances: Hospice Savannah, 1352 Eisenhower Drive, Savannah, GA 31406.

Visitation: 12 - 2 p.m. Friday at Bonaventure Funeral Home, with Funeral Services in the Chapel of Bonaventure Funeral Home at 2 p.m. Friday, with Rev. Alex Tracy and Rev. Slade Speir, officiating. Pall Bearers are Jamie Coursey, Mike Bayes, Christopher Dockery, Mark Lauman, Freddie Humphries and Aaron Blaine. Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens.
