Laverne Jr. (Zip)

d. February 3, 2019

LaVerne Joseph South, Jr. "Zip", 90, passed away Sunday February 3, 2019 at his home surrounded by his family.

LaVerne was born in Savannah on September 26, 1928 to LaVerne and Louise Hardee South. He graduated from Benedictine Military School in 1947. LaVerne was a veteran of the 117th Air Control Squadron of the United States Air National Guard. Throughout his adult life, he worked closely with his father at South Tile Company and was a successful businessman for over 20 years. LaVerne was a member of Knights of Columbus and the St. Patrick's Day Parade Committee. A devout Catholic, LaVerne was a member of the men's choir at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist for many years.

To know LaVerne, was to know one of the kindest, gentlest, practical jokers the world has ever seen. He had a large heart with a quick wit to match. He was a man of true character and strong faith. He touched the lives of everyone he met and will be greatly missed by many.

He is survived by his four sons, David South (Kathy), Dennis South (Robbi Ann), Michael South (Allison), and Stephen South; brothers, Harry South (Athene) and Fred South; sister, Jane Lindner (Bill); grandchildren, LaVerne South IV, Lauren Hodges, Ashlee South, and Molly Curry (Will); many nieces, nephews, friends and family.

He was preceded in death by his first wife Gertrude Murphy South in 1989, his second wife Bertis Hardee South in 2014 and his beloved children LaVerne Joseph South III and Linda South Hodges in 2018.

The visitation will be Thursday, February 7, 2019 from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Baker McCullough Hubert C. Baker Chapel. Rosary Service will start at 7 p.m.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, February 8, 2019 at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist. Burial to follow in Greenwich section of Bonaventure Cemetery.

The family suggests any remembrances be made in his memory to the Georgia Right to Life Organization.
