Laura D. Mayes, age 87, passed away Friday, February 24, 2023 at Riverview Health and Rehabilitation.
Laura was born August 11, 1935 in Blenheim, South Carolina to the parents of Boyd and Mattie Dees. She graduated from Lower Marlboro High School in 1954. After graduating, Laura went to school for cosmetology and completed her training in 1956. Shortly after, she accepted a position in Savannah, Georgia. It wasn’t too long after she moved to Savannah, her friend introduced her to the love of her life Mr. Benjamin Mayes. In the spring of 1958, Benjamin and Laura were married at the Christ Church in Savannah. Together, they raised two sons. Laura's love to nurture and care for others, eventually lead her to become a Teacher's Aid. In 1995 she was an honored recipient of the Para Professional of the Year by Windsor Forest Elementary School. A few years later she retired from the Chatham County Board of Education. Laura was a long time member of St. George’s Episcopal Church.
Laura is preceded in death by her parents; her son, Michael Mayes; her brother, Thomas Dees; and her sister, Sue Butts.
Laura is survived by her husband of sixty four years, Benjamin Mayes; her son, Edward Mayes (Ana) of Spartanburg, South Carolina; three grandchildren, Daniel Mayes of Greenville, South Carolina, Steven Mayes of Charleston, South Carolina, Victoria Kessler (Jacob) of Charleston; her sister, Helen Martin of Blenheim, South Carolina; and numerous niece, nephews, and cousins.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 28, 2023 at Saint George's Episcopal Church, 15 Willow Rd, Savannah, GA 31419 with the Reverend Father David Wesley Lemburg officiating the service.
An inurnment will take place after the service at Saint George's Episcopal Church Cemetery.
Remembrance in lieu of flowers can be made in honor of Laura to the Alzheimer's Association.
