Larue H. Woods

d. August 18, 2016

La Rue H. Woods, lifelong resident of Savannah, Georgia passed away August 17th 2016. She was born December 14th 1923, the fifth of six children, to the late Esther Iler and Adolf W. Hegman.

A remarkable Southern Lady, she had a "can-do" spirit that came from growing up during the Great Depression. She really came into her own during World War II when she left home to support the troops, making stops in Biloxi MS, Meridian MS where she married and New Orleans LA. After the war, it was on to New York City and then Paterson, NJ before returning to Savannah.

She was the wife of Jimmie Woods, a local Radio personality in his day, and juggled family and the social demands that came with his job. You had to admire her, as a newcomer to the entertainment world, she didn't have the benefit of a full staff; she did it all herself: cooked the meals, mixed the drinks, made her dresses and created a welcoming atmosphere - and ultimately, many memorable encounters. When Murphy's Law came into play she reinvented herself and pursued a professional career in the Insurance industry, with her "can-do" spirit she received numerous awards and commendations. She was a communicant of St. James Catholic Church.

For the younger generation, she was remembered as Memaw--a very special grandmother that was very interested in your life, eager to advise and inspire curiosity-she was full of surprises, say: a unique toy handed down through the family, and exotic tales of trips to Havana, Cuba-Germany, Russia, Japan and Hawaii, an outing with stories of old Savannah, an impromptu introduction to Glen Miller music, or an unexpected comment or funny observation. She truly loved her family and circle of close friends.

The impressions she left were strong ones. For those of us who knew her, she is truly unforgettable.

She is survived by her son, Jimmy and his wife Terri Woods and their son Jim of Savannah; her grandson, Cris and his wife Dulce Subrizi of San Francisco, her grandchildren, David W., Katherine E. and Andrew M. Woods of Savannah; her great grandsons, Cody and Corbin; her niece, Donna and husband Zach Fleetwood and grandnephew Reed, Dillwyn, VA; her niece, Julia and her husband Allan Nasser and grandniece Lydia of Tacoma, WA; her cousins, Ireta, Jean, Edwin and Edith of Savannah, Georgia; her dearest friend Marion Smith of Tallahassee, FL and her daughter Trisha.

She is pre-deceased by her husband, James L. Woods Sr.; her daughter, Carole E. Subrizi and son Michael A. Woods.

Service will be held at Baker McCullough Bonaventure Road Chapel on Wednesday August 24th, 2016 with visitation
