Larry Thomas Strickland, 80, husband of Julia Dyer Strickland, died peacefully on Saturday, December 5, 2020.
Larry was born on December 24, 1939 to Lonnie W. “L.W.” and Lillie Strickland. He was educated in the Catholic Schools of Savannah, attended Benedictine Military School, and Carlisle Military School.
He was a Supply Boat Captain in the oil fields of Louisiana and later worked at Kemira. Larry served in the United States Army. He owned and operated the original Shell House Restaurant on Wilmington Island and the Seashell House on Skidaway Road for many years. He owned and operated Strickland Power Wash, Inc. with his loving wife Julia.
Larry was of the Catholic faith and was a longtime parishioner of St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church. Religion was a very important and comforting part of Larry’s life.
He was an active member of the St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee, The Irish Heritage Society, The Shenanigan Society, The Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge #1550, and the Tybee Lite Shrine Club. He was the 3 term Commodore of the Lazaretto Boat Club. He was a member of the Thunderbolt Lodge #693, F.&A.M., the Scottish Rite Consistory-Valley of Savannah and Alee Shrine. He enjoyed all of the coastal life’s pleasures (fishing, crabbing, shrimping, & boating). If it had to do with water…Larry was there.
In addition to his wife Julia, Larry leaves behind his sons, Thomas Lamar Strickland, Sr. (Sandy) and Michael Eugene Strickland (Liz); grandsons, Thomas Lamar Strickland, Jr. (April) and Brandon Strickland (Kaley); great-grandson, Thomas Lamar Strickland, III; and great-granddaughter, Ava Strickland. Larry is predeceased by his parents, “L.W.” and Lillie Strickland and his only brother, Lawrence Strickland; and many other relatives and dear friends.
A memorial service will be held at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church on Friday, December 18, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. The family will be receiving friends from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service. A private graveside service will be held at a later date.
Due to the COVID pandemic, social distancing and the wearing of masks must be practiced.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that you consider a donation in Larry’s memory to St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church, 7020 Concord Road, Savannah, GA 31410 or St. Vincent’s Academy, 207 East Liberty Street, Savannah, GA 31401.
