Katherine Vickie Hathaway was born in Savannah, Georgia on July 30, 1949 and was a long- time resident of Garden City. She was the daughter of Amos and Aggie Hathaway. Vickie graduated from Groves High School and received undergraduate and graduate degrees from Armstrong State College in Savannah. By profession she was a social worker in Chatham and Effingham Counties.
Vickie was a long-time member of the Garden City United Methodist Church which she dearly loved. She helped there in several ways including as newsletter editor and co-organist/pianist. When health permitted, she enjoyed participating in various Garden City Community Center activities, such as socializing with friends, eating lunch and playing cards. Vickie greatly enjoyed family reunions and visiting with her cousins, aunts and uncles. Two great loves were spending time on Hilton Head Island during her youth and caring for an ornery (to some) cockatiel named Hooty.
At its essence, Vickie’s life was about being a good friend and trying to help. Numerous times she offered financial help to others who were going through tough times. She was often very generous to organized charitable efforts. Vickie tried to help friends and family mend broken relationships by brokering meetings of reconciliation. This was her nature; she felt good when she was helping other people feel better.
Vickie had multiple health challenges that worsened in the final months of her life. She died peacefully at Memorial University Hospital with family and pastor at her side. She was preceded in death by her parents Amos and Aggie Hathaway and is survived by her brother Rick Hathaway and sister-in-law Diane Hathaway of Martin, Georgia. Also surviving are nieces Liz Hathaway of Chattanooga, Tennessee and Becca O’Shields of Athens, Georgia.
There was a celebration of life service for Vickie at noon on Wednesday, May 24 at Baker McCullough Garden City Chapel. Her ashes are interred in the Hathaway family plot at Hillcrest Abbey East Cemetery in Savannah.
Donations in memory of Vickie may be given to the Garden City United Methodist Church.
