Karl A. Holmen, age 90, of Savannah passed away Tuesday, May 30th, 2017 at Hospice Savannah.

He was born September 23, 1926 in Savannah. He attended Sacred Heart School and graduated from Benedictine Military School in 1944. He was a veteran of World War II and served in the Philippine Islands and in the Army of Occupation in Japan.

He graduated from the University of Georgia in 1950. He was employed by Columbia Naval Stores for four years. In 1954, he joined the staff of the Liberty National Bank and Trust Company and retired from the Trust Company of Georgia Bank of Savannah N.A. in 1991.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Karl A and Mary G Holmen, his spouse Mary D. Holmen, and his son John D. Holmen. He is survived by sons Karl A. III (Cynthia), Joseph A., and Robert G. Holmen all of Savannah, a daughter Mary H. Ellis (Chip) of Nashville, TN, two granddaughters Lauren M. Schwan (Nate) of Savannah, Margot S. Mahar of San Bernardino, CA, and his brother Gustav T. Holmen (Joy) of the Villages, FL.

He was a member of the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist parish for over 55 years. He was a past president of the Cathedral Parish Council and the Cathedral School Board. He was a member of the St Patrick's Day Parade Committee. He was an Honorary Life Member and Past Grand Knight of Savannah Council #631 Knights of Columbus. He was an Honorary Life Member and Past Faithful Navigator of the 4th Degree K of C. He was State Deputy of Georgia in the Order's Centennial Year 1982.

He served as Treasurer of the Benedictine Athletic Association and was a recipient of their "Man of the Year" award in 1959. He was a member of the Benedictine Alumni Association and the BC Survivors Club. He was also a board member of Serviam, Inc. DBA Rose of Sharon Apartments. He served as president of the non-profit corporation.

He was a life member of George K. Gannam Post #184 American Legion, Past Commander of Patrick Anthony Russell Post #4392 Veterans of Foreign Wars, He was also a charter member and Judge Advocate of Lt. Gen. John N. McLaughlin Post #1943 Catholic War Veterans and served as Parliamentarian of the Veterans Council of Chatham County and was appointed to serve as the 2014 Veterans Day Parade Marshal.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 pm on Thursday, June 1st, 2017 at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist with a Rosary service to be held at 6 pm. A mass of Christian Burial will be Friday June 2nd, 2017 at 10 am at the Cathedral. Interment to follow at Catholic Cemetery. Scott Wyatt and Post #1943 Catholic War Veterans will serve as honorary pallbearers.
